‘Stranger Things’ Final Season May Only Focus On The Original Key Characters

Stranger Things is easily one of the most popular and well-received shows to come out of Netflix. With four successful seasons, the show has been a critical and fan favorite. It also brought back the aesthetic and storytelling of Steven Speilberg’s films and Stephen King’s novels.

Fans have been eagerly waiting for its fifth and final season after its amazing fourth season. Now there are new updates about Netflix’s flagship show. The makers are now planning to focus only on the key characters in the final season. This is probably because the latest season had some new characters which deviated the focus from the main ones.

In a recent interview with IndieWire, Ross Duffer (one of the co-creators) talked about not introducing new characters in the upcoming final season of ‘Stranger Things.’

We’re doing our best to resist [adding new characters] for Season 5,” he said. “We’re trying not to do that so we can focus on the OG characters, I guess.”

Matt Duffer also talked about the issue. “Whenever we introduce a new character, we want to make sure that they’re going to be an integral part of the narrative. So that’s something with Eddie this season, where we go, ‘Well, we need a character here for this storyline to really work, and to give it the engine that is needed.’”

He continued, “But every time we do that, we’re nervous, because you go, ‘We’ve got a great cast of characters here, and actors, and any moment we’re spending with a new character, we’re taking time away from one of the other actors.’ So we’re just very, very careful about who we’re introducing.”

Their plan stems from the viewer’s bittersweet experience of the recent season. Joseph Quinn’s Eddie was a new character who became a fan favorite. But it also meant that one of the original main characters like Charlie Heaton’s Jonathan will be sidelined.

The Duffer Brothers have clarified that the fifth and final season will not be as long as the fourth one. It had a total of nine episodes that were split into two volumes.

Matt has said, “I think we’re aiming for eight again. We don’t want it to be 13 hours. We’re aiming for more like 10 hours or something. I think it’s going to be longer than Season 1 because we just have so much to wrap up, but I don’t think it’s going to be as long as Season 4.”

The writer’s room for the last season was planned to start in August. There is no official confirmation, but the finale might on 2024 or 2025.

Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s president of scripted programs for the US and Canada, has said that all the finale episodes will release at once.
