The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen its fair share of highs and lows. However, ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ has unfortunately landed on the wrong side of history.
While fans eagerly anticipated Anthony Mackie’s first solo outing as the new Captain America, hoping for a triumphant fresh chapter in the franchise, the film’s reception has thrown a wrench in those expectations.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Marks A Rough Start For Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson

Not only has ‘Brave New World’ received the lowest audience rating of any Captain America film, but it has also set a new unwanted record. The film earned the lowest CinemaScore of the entire MCU with a disappointing B-. Given the franchise’s history of strong audience reception, this result is shocking.

For years, the Captain America films have been among the most well-received in the MCU. ‘The First Avenger’ earned an A- CinemaScore. Whereas, ‘The Winter Soldier’ maintained a stellar reputation as one of the best superhero films of all time. Additionally, ‘Civil War’ to date is considered one of the best Marvel films.
Moreover, Even ‘Eternals’, ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘The Marvels’, all of which were heavily criticized, managed to score higher than ‘Brave New World’. On the bright side, however, the film isn’t exactly a financial disaster. It is also on track to be the biggest opening weekend of the year so far.
Additionally, while CinemaScore represents the reactions of opening night audiences, Rotten Tomatoes tells a slightly different story. The film has a 50% audience rating indicating that many viewers still found it enjoyable despite the mixed reception.
What The Reception Means For MCU’s Future

Does the bad reception for ‘Brave New World’ affect the MCU? Not necessarily. The MCU has been through rough patches before, and not every film has to be ‘Endgame‘. Marvel has been on a rollercoaster ride post-Endgame, alternating between massive hits and box office disappointments.

Now, the studio has given fans a lot to look forward to. Moreover, ‘Brave New World‘ felt more like a building block for what was to come rather than a solo Cap film. Moreover, this rocky start doesn’t mean the end of the road. Additionally, with ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ set to release later this year, Marvel Studios has an opportunity to course-correct.
