When Christopher Nolan had to crash a plane in ‘Tenet,’ he didn’t hide behind the special effects solution. God, clearly, is in the details. For his upcoming summer blockbuster ‘Oppenheimer,’ Christopher Nolan once again turned to his perfectionist ways.
In a recent interview, Nolan talked about how ‘Oppenheimer’ was made with attention to detail. Nolan, who remains devoted to his signature sense of spectacle, had real scientists as the background actors. This was done to ensure scientific accuracy for every scene.

Christopher Nolan On Placing Real Scientists In The Background
More than a filmmaker, Christopher Nolan has proved to be a master technician and an intellect. It only makes sense for a mind of his caliber to build a story of a mind troubled by its own genius. While talking to EW, Christopher Nolan and Cillian Murphy discussed the degree of precision that went into filming. Under Nolan’s direction, everyone would show up prepared with infinite knowledge about their roles.
On his decision to have scientists serve as background actors, Nolan told EW, “We were in the real Los Alamos and we had a lot of real scientists as extras. We needed the crowd of extras to give reactions, and improvise, and we were getting sort of impromptu, very educated speeches. It was really fun to listen to.”
The British filmmaker added, “You’ve been on sets where you’ve got a lot of extras around and they’re more or less thinking about lunch. These guys were thinking about the geopolitical implications of nuclear arms and knew a lot about it. It actually was a great reminder every day of: We have to be really on our game, we have to be faithful to the history here, and really know what we’re up to.”
