Gilderoy Lockhart arrived at Hogwarts as the charming, bestselling author everyone adored; the wizard who had fought banshees, defeated werewolves, and survived trolls. With a dazzling smile and a shelf full of awards, Lockhart seemed like the perfect Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in ‘Harry Potter.’
But behind that bright smile was a secret so dangerous it would soon destroy everything he had built. And when the truth finally came out, the spell that made him famous would be the one that ended his career, and his memory, forever.
Gilderoy Lockhart: A Year Of Fame, Lies And Disaster

When Lockhart took the Defence Against the Dark Arts post in 1992, he made sure everyone knew who he was. His classroom walls were covered in portraits of himself, and his lessons often began with stories from his books, all supposedly based on his own adventures. But it didn’t take long for his students to see that he was more showman than teacher.

Lockhart’s first class ended in chaos when he released Cornish Pixies and failed to control them. Later, he accidentally removed all the bones from Harry Potter’s arm while trying to mend it. Even Valentine’s Day became one of his dramatic displays; the Great Hall turned pink, with singing dwarves delivering cards and poems.
Through it all, Lockhart’s confidence never wavered. He bragged about knowing the secret of the Chamber of Secrets, claimed to have faced worse monsters before, and told everyone he could handle anything. What no one knew was that he had built his fame on a lie, by stealing other wizards’ stories and erasing their memories with his powerful Memory Charms. But his lies were about to catch up with him.
When The Spell Finally Backfired

When Ginny Weasley disappeared into the Chamber of Secrets, she finally demanded that Lockhart prove his claims and rescue her. Pretending to agree, he instead began packing his belongings to flee. That’s when Harry and Ron caught him, forcing him to accompany them to the Chamber’s entrance in Moaning Myrtle’s bathroom.

Inside the tunnels, Lockhart saw one last chance to save himself. He grabbed Ron’s broken wand and aimed it at the boys. In fact, he intended to wipe their memories so he could take credit for the rescue. But the spell ‘Obliviate!’ backfired. The broken wand exploded in his hand, blasted backwards, and erased his own memory completely.
When Fawkes the phoenix carried everyone out of the Chamber after Harry’s battle with the basilisk, however, Lockhart was dazed and smiling, unable to remember his own name. The wizard who had made a living by erasing others’ memories had just lost his own.
The Shocking Aftermath In ‘Harry Potter’

Lockhart was sent to St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. There, he became a long-term patient in the Janus Thickey Ward due to a spell of damage. His fraud was never made public, as Dumbledore seemed to think losing his memory was punishment enough. By Christmas 1995, when Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Ginny visited him at St Mungo’s, Lockhart had recovered enough to write neatly again. He still loved signing autographs with his old peacock-feather quill.
Lockhart received weekly fan letters from admirers like Gladys Gudgeon, but didn’t remember why people knew him. Though he never regained his memory, Lockhart appeared oddly content. In fact, he seemed cheerful, harmless, and free from the lies that once defined him. He’s the living proof that no charm lasts forever.
