The teaser trailer for HBO’s highly anticipated ‘Harry Potter‘ series dropped a couple of days ago on March 26, and, surprisingly, it has generated viewership numbers no one expected.
Despite the controversy surrounding the show’s cast, the original author, and backlash from hardcore fans over the decision to remake the beloved novels, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘ has become the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history.
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Doubles the Previous Record

The show’s teaser trailer generated 277 million views (non-paid) across all platforms in its first 48 hours, which is now more than double the previous record held by ‘Euphoria‘ Season 3.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced the figures on Friday, highlighting the trailer’s unprecedented reach. The figure shows the strong interest in the live-action version of J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series, which has been popular for more than two decades.
First Look at HBO’s Harry Potter Series

The trailer gives fans their first major look at the reimagined story of the boy who lived. It shows familiar moments from its first book, including Harry Potter learning about his magical background, his journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and his early days with friends like Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

The casting has also sparked interest, with Dominic McLaughlin playing the show’s protagonist, Harry, alongside a new cast bringing the well-known characters back to screen after almost 15 years for a television audience.
However, this is not a direct remake of the 2001 film starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Instead, it is a more faithful but expanded storytelling made for a serialized premium television format. HBO has already said before that it will go deeper into the books, covering more of the lore and character arcs over multiple seasons, with one book adapted per season.
What Makes the ‘Harry Potter’ Series So Enduring

The Harry Potter franchise is still a major cultural heavyweight, with the original films earning billions at the box office and the books selling hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.
Nostalgia is also a big driving factor, as many grew up with the story and are now sharing it with their children. At the same time, a new generation is discovering the series through social media, various fan communities, and, of course, streaming platforms.
HBO ‘Harry Potter’ Series Release Date

As one would expect, HBO executives said they were pleased with the response. The record-breaking numbers not only support the large investment in the project but also suggest strong potential for new subscribers on Max when the series launches. The show is set to release on Christmas 2026, making it a key holiday event.
It’s safe to say that earlier HBO mega hits such as ‘Game of Thrones‘ and its predecessor, ‘House of the Dragon,’ built huge audiences, but neither reached this level of early attention.
