The finale of House of The DragonSeason 2 has buzzed the fandom of the fantasy series with excitement and great expectations for the next season. The conclusion has set many plots in motion that shall lead to the Dance of the Dragons – one is the destruction of Sharp Point by Aemond Targaryen, current King Regeant.

At the beginning of the episode titled ‘The Queen Who Ever Was’, Aemond is seen overlooking a burning settlement by the sea, on his formidable dragon, Vhagar. Later in the episode, it is revealed that the destroyed land was Sharp Point. Many view this as an impulsive action on Aemond’s side as Rhaenyra Targaryen gains riders for her unclaimed dragons. However, some see this attack as another one of Aemond’s brilliant battle strategies.

Why Did Aemond Burn Sharp Point?

Viewers believe Aemond attacked Sharp Point on impulse. As Alicent Hightower says, “You wish to rule the Seven Kingdoms but you rain ruin and death upon its smallfolk when you have been insulted because it made you feel strong”. But the attack could yet have more significance. In the map of Westeros by George R.R Martin, Sharp Point is the nearest dwelling to Dragonstone, where Rhaenyra resides. It sends a powerful message as it brings Rhaenyra’s protection under doubt.

Showrunner Ryan Condal reveals another reason behind Aemond’s attack, in ‘Inside the Episode’ that aired after the finale. He explains that Sharp Point is the seat of House Massey. Lord Gormon Massey has a seat at Rhaenyra’s Council. Aemond wants to punish any House in the Seven Kingdoms that sides with the Pretender.

Moreover, Lord Massey’s daughter Elinda Massey has played a tremendous role in Rhaenyra’s campaign to create public unrest in King’s Landing. She is the red-cloaked woman who stealthily travels to King’s Landing. She spreads words that Rhaenyra is looking for Targaryen bastards for her dragons. Whether Aemond knows of Elinda’s participation is unclear. However, we can surely conclude that burning Sharp Point was merely Aemond lashing out.

As the second season of ‘House of the Dragon‘ closes, fans have reacted with mixed reviews. Daemon Targaryen’s vision of the Song of Ice And Fire left many viewers in awe. The vision prophecized the death of dragons, Daemon’s death, and the rise of White Walkers. The fans are exhilarated over Daenerys Targaryen’s cameo appearance as it confirms that she was the ‘prince that was promised’.

Whereas, some viewers are disappointed over the slow pace of the HBO series. The showrunner, Ryan Condal puts their impatience at rest. He states in the ‘Inside the Episode’ that season 3 of House of the Dragon will be dominated by battle scenes. “While this season was very much about the fits and starts of an early medieval war, season three is clearly going to be about total war,” Hence, viewers can also expect a battle over Godseye. Heleana Targaryen tells Aemond in the season finale that he is swallowed by the Godseye and never seen again.
