While talking to a news outlet, Irma’s nephew explained the last minutes of his uncle’s life. He said, “What happened was my Uncle Joe went to go leave flowers for my Tia (Aunt) Irma, his wife, and whenever he got back, he sat down at the kitchen table with his entire family, and after 3 minutes, he just fell over. I’m told my mom was giving him chest compressions. It happened around 10 o’clock. I know my little brother was there.”
There is a GoFundMe page that Irma’s cousin has created, which collected $200,000 for the family. Debra Austin, elementary school shooting victim’s cousin wrote, “I am equally devasted [sic] to report Irma’s husband Joe has tragically passed away this morning(5/26/2022) as a result of a medical emergency. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers. I truly believe Joe died of a broken heart and losing the love of his life of more than 30 years was too much to bear.”
