Sir Ian McKellen has shared a deeply personal reaction after working with Johnny Depp on ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol‘. What seemed like a short collaboration turned into something far more meaningful, as McKellen spoke openly about his admiration for Depp.
He even admitted that he “fell in love with” Depp during their time on set. Now, his words have drawn attention, especially as Depp returns to a major Hollywood role after several years away from big studio projects.
Ian McKellen Reveals What Made Johnny Depp Stand Out on Set

At the New York premiere of The Christophers, McKellen explained what made Depp so impressive. He said, “He’s in spankingly good form,” and made it clear that Depp brought something rare to the role.
He added, “Effervescent, funny, irreverent, serious; all at the same time.” With that, McKellen pointed to the balance Depp carried on set. He never relied on just one tone. He moved between moods with ease and kept scenes alive.
McKellen also spoke about Depp’s behavior with the cast. He said, “He’s very obliging to his fellow actors.” He then added, “There was a wonderful feeling on the set.” These details clearly reflect how Depp has contributed to the environment, not just the performance.
Depp’s Presence Creates a Unique On-Set Atmosphere

McKellen described the overall experience in simple terms. He said, “It was a bit of a love fest, really.” That line shows how comfortable the cast felt during the shoot and how easily they connected.

The film, directed by Ti West, includes a strong cast. Rupert Grint plays Bob Cratchit. Andrea Riseborough takes the role of the Ghost of Christmas Past. Tramell Tillman appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present. McKellen plays Jacob Marley and kept things light when he said, “I play a ghost!”
The shoot lasted only six days, but McKellen saw real value in it. He said, “It was only six days, but it was well worth it.” Time definitely did not limit the impact of the experience.
This role also marks an important step for Depp. Now, he returns to a major film after ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald‘ in 2018. After his legal dispute with ex-wife Amber Heard, a U.S. jury ruled in 2022 that both had defamed each other, which affected his career path.
