Chris Evans recently shut down speculation that he will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Steve Rogers. Previously, insider reports suggested that the actor was set to reprise his role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
Now, Evans has made it clear that he is “happily retired” and has no plans to suit up as Captain America again. The rumors, which first surfaced in December 2024, suggested that Evans had signed on for the next big MCU event film. However, the actor insists that the reports are false.
Chris Evans Sets The Record Straight
In a recent interview with Esquire, Chris Evans made it clear that nothing has changed regarding his status in the MCU. “That’s not true, though,” Evans said when asked about the reports. “This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple of years, ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no, happily retired!”

Additionally, Anthony Mackie, the new Captain America, also chimed in on the situation. Mackie revealed that he reached out to Evans after the rumors surfaced but was met with a firm denial. “I didn’t know! I talked to Chris a few weeks ago, and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. “
“I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’” Mackie said. Evans’ response? A simple, “Nope.” While previously all the reports confirmed Evans’s return with full certainty, now the chances look thin.
Previous Rumors Claimed That Chris Evans Would Return To The MCU As A Different Character
While Chris Evans seems adamant that he’s done playing Steve Rogers, speculation remains that he could return to the MCU in another capacity. Previously, industry insider Jeff Sneider recently suggested that Evans might return as Nomad, an identity Steve Rogers took up in the comics after abandoning the Captain America title.

If true, it could mean a multiversal variant of Rogers (perhaps even an “evil” version) could be making an appearance. However, all of this remains purely speculative. Moreover, Evans has repeatedly stated that he’s content with his MCU departure and has no interest in returning, at least not in any significant capacity.
Despite Marvel’s ever-expanding multiverse and the trend of bringing back legacy characters, Chris Evans appears to be standing firm in his decision to remain retired from the role of Captain America. Whether or not he’s playing coy remains to be seen. However, for now, fans should take him at his word.
