“I’ve Contemplated It”: James Gunn Talks About The Possibility Of Bringing Robert Pattinson’s Batman Into The New DCU

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, recently shared his thoughts on integrating Robert Pattinson’s Batman into the evolving DC Universe. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn admitted he had thought about merging Pattinson’s brooding Dark Knight with the larger DCU.

The revelation comes as the DCU finds its footing with projects like ‘Creature Commandos’ and the much-anticipated ‘Superman’. Moreover, it’s safe to say, that his comments have fans intrigued by the idea.

James Gunn’s openness about considering all possibilities speaks about his vision for the DCU. Yet, despite the allure of adding Pattinson’s Batman to the DCU, Gunn emphasized the importance of other stories. These self-contained narratives, such as ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and ‘Superman & Lois’.

These worlds allow filmmakers to craft unique worlds that don’t adhere to the constraints of the DCU’s continuity. “I’ve contemplated it, yeah. I contemplate everything,” Gunn explained. “I’d be an idiot not to think of how this could go, but I’m committed to both telling stories in the DCU and telling Elseworlds stories.”

Additionally, according to him, this approach provides room for directors like Matt Reeves to flourish. Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ universe, officially labeled under the Elseworlds banner, gives Robert Pattinson the freedom to focus on his trilogy. Moreover, with ‘The Batman – Part II’ in development, Reeves and Pattinson are reportedly deep into scripting a sequel.

For fans wondering about the DCU’s Batman, James Gunn also confirmed that a new iteration of the Caped Crusader will debut in ‘The Brave and the Bold’. Directed by Andy Muschietti, this film will introduce Bruce Wayne as a father and mentor to Damian Wayne, the rebellious Robin who is also his biological son.

The film will feature the Bat Family prominently. Additionally, this will signal a shift in tone and direction from the solitary, tortured portrayal seen in Reeves’ films. Still, Gunn admitted ‘The Brave and the Bold’ script is a work in progress, stating that it’s not yet “where he would like it to be.”

Unlike Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’ trilogy, this project will integrate Bruce Wayne into a larger superhero universe. Moreover, the decision to keep Pattinson’s Batman separate is largely attributed to Matt Reeves’ creative autonomy and Gunn’s respect for his vision.  In December 2023, Gunn clarified, “It’s Matt’s choice, and we respect that.
