Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Causes Exponential Growth In Parents Looking Up ‘Barbie’ And ‘Ken’ As Baby Names

Margot Robbie-starrer ‘Barbie’ has created history by earning over $1 billion at the global box office. Its feminist message has appealed to the audience, as proved by the reaction to the film. But more importantly, it has created a cultural phenomenon, changing how people name their infant children.

Since the movie has come out, parents have found Barbie and Ken excellent names for their newborns. Statistics have shown how the film’s popularity has encouraged people to get creative with parenting decisions. It remains to be seen what other aspects of our lives this movie will influence.

Nameberry told People magazine about the rising interest in the names ‘Barbie’ and ‘Ken’ following the release of Margot Robbie‘s fantasy-comedy film. Reportedly, the name search for ‘Barbie’ has increased to 603%. ‘Ken’ has seen a rise of 293% for popular boy names. In the next ten years, we may look at scores of children named after this craze.

Sophie Kihm, Nameberry Editor-in-Chief, clarifies, “Barbie and Ken are piquing parents’ interest, but this doesn’t mean that will translate into actual usage. As of now, Barbie is a predominant Amish name. Barbie and Ken are both dated names that aren’t due to comeback yet, so while there may be a slight bump from the movie, neither will be among the most popular baby names of 2023.”

On the other side of the baby-naming cultural phenomenon of ‘Barbie’ is the relationship aspect of the film. The movie has birthed another trend that helps determine how strong a relationship is. Dubbed the ‘Barbie Test,’ women use it to test their partner’s compatibility.

As reported by Cosmopolitan, the women are looking at how their partner reacts to the film’s feminist message. If he’s easily offended and doesn’t get the satire, he must leave. But if he finds the movie a good time, keeping him around for a long time would be great.
