“Massive Win For DC & An Electric Introduction To The First Hero Of The DCU”: First Reactions To ‘Blue Beetle’ Praise The Film’s Original Take On The Superhero Origin Story

The DC Universe is in disarray. With the underwhelming box office performance of ‘Shazam! Fury Of Gods’ and ‘The Flash,’ James Gunn’s tenure as the new co-boss is not off to a great start. With the heavy hitters not doing it for the team, it all rests on the rookie debut of ‘Blue Beetle.’

‘Blue Beetle’ is not open to the general public, but the early reviews for the film have rolled. People have taken to social media to express their love for the first Latino superhero screen representation. Overall reviews have been positive, with many enjoying the perfect dose of comedy and action in ‘Blue Beetle.’

The initial reviews for ‘Blue Beetle‘ have been primarily positive. Things may be different once the general audience gets to watch the film in theatres. However, those lucky enough to see it have praised Xolo Maridueña’s superhero debut with arms wide open and the film’s representation of Latinx culture.

@griffschiller of FilmSpeak found the film a great character introduction and had the following to say about the movie, “BlueBeetle is a MASSIVE win for DC & an electric introduction to the first hero of the DCU. Xolo Maridueña’s charismatic star making performance confidently anchors this intimate synthwave journey of family, heritage, & purpose. A fresh and endearing spin on the origin story!”

@POCculture called the film their “favorite post-Nolan DC film”. Their review reads, “BlueBeetle is my favorite post-Nolan DC film. It’s an action packed, highly entertaining superhero story about family…& there’s nothing more important than family. The film is unique in that it lovingly & unabashedly shares the Reyes family’s Mexican culture. @bluebeetle.”

@theatomreview is very much impressed with what he saw. His review for the film reads, “BlueBeetle REVIEW: SUPERHERO MAGIC! It’s so creative, hilarious & emotional. A fun, coming of age adventure with cool cameos & insane action that’ll bust your blue balls. Not just another comic book film, it’s one of the BEST DC movies ever! A fitting end setting up what’s next.”

James Gunn caused the DCU fans by declaring ‘Blue Beetle’ the first DCU character, but not the first film. In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine, ‘Blue Beetle’ director Àngel Manuel Sotto confirmed that the movie is part of “future installments of DCU”. However, the previous DCU movies do not impact the film’s events.

Àngel Manuel Sotto clarified Gunn’s comments, informing, “We are part of the universe, we are part of the world, we are part of the plans that they have been creating for the future installments of the DCU. But we are not tied to all the films from the past. Yes, our movie lives in the world where superheroes exist. But that doesn’t mean that a certain event, or certain alliance, or certain things from the past dictate where our film is going.”
