In a major development, LA police arrested ASAP Rocky on Wednesday morning on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Police took the singer into custody when he was stepping off a private plane at LAX airport. His arrest came in connection with an incident in November in which Los Angeles police say he shot at a person in Hollywood. The musician arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on his way back from Barbados. He was vacationing there with his girlfriend, singer Rihanna, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child.
Why Was A$AP Rocky Arrested In The First Place?
According to LAPD Captain Jonathan Tippet, Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was apprehended and booked on suspicion of assault by the Robbery-Homicide Division. As a result, following the arrest, detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department searched the rapper’s home for possible evidence. Detectives have been tracking the artist’s return from Barbados for some time, according to law enforcement sources. Hence, LAPD investigators used a pry bar to force open a gate and a small battering ram to break open a door at Mayers’ home, according to a law enforcement source.
What Was The Whole Argument About?
The assault charges stem from an incident on Nov. 6, 2021, when two acquaintances got into an argument near Selma and Argyle avenues in the Hollywood area around 10:15 p.m. According to law enforcement, the argument escalated and one person fired a handgun at the other. After suffering a minor injury, the victim sought medical attention. The suspect, identified as Mayers, and two other males fled the scene on foot after the shooting, according to police. Mayers, 33, was previously convicted of assault in Sweden when he was there for a festival performance in the summer of 2019. Hence, he and two members of his entourage got accusations of aggravated assault.
In August 2019, he was convicted during a trial in which a judge had heard evidence about a street brawl in Stockholm in late June. In the brawl, Rocky stomped on a man after throwing him to the ground. Then, Mayers claimed he was acting in self-defense during his testimony. Hence, the judge ruled that the incident was not serious enough to warrant incarceration. After detectives attempted to question Mayers about the shooting, he invoked his right to legal counsel. Mayers’ lawyer, Alan Jackson, did not respond to requests for comment. At last, according to the records, the rapper’s release is based on a $550,000 bond on Wednesday afternoon.
