Sydney Sweeney Breaks Silence On ‘MAGA Barbie’ Label As Politics Hijack Her Career

Sydney Sweeney is used to online attention, but one label in particular has followed her more persistently than others. Across social media, some users keep calling her “MAGA Barbie,” tying her image to political assumptions she never publicly claimed.

The nickname has sparked debate, criticism, and plenty of speculation. And, now, the actress is responding. Instead of ignoring the situation, she is drawing a boundary and explaining how she feels about being politically labeled.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Sweeney addressed the nickname while promoting her lingerie line, SYRN. The interviewer asked directly about the “MAGA Barbie” tag and the political assumptions circulating about her online.

She made her position clear. “I’ve never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of.” She suggested that because she avoids political talk, some people push the narrative further and try to use her as a pawn in their own debates.

Most notably, she said, “It’s somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that.” With that line, she summed up her frustration about how quickly the internet can attach identities to public figures.

Past Controversies That Fueled The Political Discourse

When asked why she does not correct people more forcefully, Sweeney answered honestly. She said she still has not figured out the perfect response, partly because any denial can get twisted. If she says something is not true, some critics might accuse her of only trying to protect her image.

Rather than fighting every comment, she chooses to stay grounded. “I just have to continue being who I am, because I know who I am.” She also added, “I know what I stand for.” For her, self-awareness matters more than public approval.

She doubled down on staying away from politics, saying, “I’m in the arts. I’m not here to speak on politics.” She explained that she became an actor to tell stories, not to enter political spaces. At the same time, she shared a clear personal value: “I don’t believe in hate in any form. I believe we should all love each other and have respect and understanding for one another.”

The label gained momentum after her 2025 denim campaign with American Eagle stirred conversation online. Some viewers read political meaning into the ad even though she did not present it that way. The discussion grew louder when Donald Trump publicly commented on reports about her being a registered Republican.

Sweeney later addressed that backlash in an interview with PEOPLE. She said she was “honestly surprised by the reaction” and clarified that she did not support the views of some people connected to the campaign.
