Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman’ redefined the Dark Knight for a modern audience. Moreover, it established Robert Pattinson’s Batman as a detective first, and a caped crusader second. The film’s chilling interpretation of the Riddler left fans questioning how a sequel could possibly top it.
Now, with Reeves’ script for ‘The Batman 2’ reportedly complete and filming set to begin soon, speculation is swirling around which villain will take up the mantle as Bruce Wayne’s next great adversary.
Why The Court Of Owls Could Be The Perfect Villain For ‘The Batman 2’

Recent comments from Reeves and others involved in the production have given audiences intriguing clues. While the Joker may seem like the obvious choice, Reeves has hinted otherwise. Instead, two possibilities rise to the forefront: Hush, Bruce Wayne’s twisted childhood friend, or the Court of Owls. Both villains offer deeply personal and haunting challenges for Bruce Wayne.

The Court of Owls is one of DC Comics’ newer but most impactful creations. They are not your standard foe. Rather than a lone madman with a gimmick, the Court is a centuries-old secret society made up of Gotham’s wealthiest and most powerful elites. They have silently pulled Gotham’s strings for generations, using assassins known as Talons to maintain control.
Thematically, they are a perfect fit for the story Reeves wants to tell. His comments suggest the sequel will dig even deeper into Bruce Wayne’s personal history, particularly the weight of his family legacy. The Court would tie directly into this, undermining everything Thomas and Martha Wayne ever tried to build, while exposing Bruce to the chilling realization that Gotham was never his to save.
‘The Batman’ dealt with corruption in Gotham’s police and political systems, painting the city as a rotting structure barely held together. The Court represents the root of that rot, the hidden architects of Gotham’s decay. They embody the idea that the city isn’t broken by accident; it was designed to be broken, for the benefit of a select few. For a film series that thrives on mystery, they’re an ideal choice.
Why Hush May Be Left Behind

Of course, Hush has been a fan-favorite theory since the first film. The 2022 movie even nods toward him, with Riddler’s rants about the Wayne family echoing the Batman: Hush storyline. Thomas Elliot, Bruce’s childhood friend-turned-bitter enemy, would offer a highly personal conflict, with a mystery steeped in Bruce’s past. However, Reeves himself may have dimmed those hopes.

In an interview on X, he acknowledged his fascination with Hush. “I’ll choose Hush, I’ll say. But that doesn’t mean the next one will be Hush.” That caution may not be accidental. Introducing Hush now might feel predictable, even anticlimactic, given the buzz already surrounding him. Reeves is a storyteller who thrives on surprise, and revealing Hush would undermine the air of secrecy he’s carefully cultivated.
Moreover, Hush works best as a long game. He’s a master manipulator who thrives in stories where his presence is teased and built over time. By contrast, the Court of Owls can explode onto the screen as a shocking new force, making them better suited to the sequel’s pacing and scope. Reeves has emphasized that ‘The Batman 2’ will again lean into the detective-noir atmosphere that set the first film apart. He’s also stressed that the story will tackle aspects of Bruce Wayne and Batman “never really done in a movie before.”
