Annihilus, a warlord from the Negative Zone, was introduced with one goal: the complete eradication of all life. Unlike many Earth-centric events in Marvel history, Annihilation was a bold, galaxy-spanning narrative that spotlighted characters like Nova, Silver Surfer, Ronan the Accuser, and even Thanos in an entirely new light. And here’s the kicker: it worked without the Avengers.
That’s what makes Annihilation such an appealing prospect for the MCU. We’ve seen the Avengers save the world a dozen times over. We’ve seen multiversal chaos. But the cosmic corner of Marvel is still largely unexplored. After ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, the future of Marvel’s space-based storytelling feels unclear. Annihilation could be the perfect bridge, an opportunity to introduce a new wave of galactic heroes and elevate dormant villains.
It could also offer a compelling change in tone. The MCU has started investing in darker themes, especially in its recent entries like ‘Thunderbolts*’ and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. Annihilation would push that even further. The event is darker, bloodier, and more emotionally intense than most Marvel crossovers. It’s the kind of story that would thrive on big-screen spectacle while offering something entirely new for audiences.
Other Major Marvel Stories Which Need To Be Explored
While Annihilation might be the crown jewel of unadapted Marvel tales, it’s not the only one. There are several equally significant storylines that fans are still waiting to see come to life, each with its own potential. One such storyline is World War Hulk. Though ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ borrowed elements from the Planet Hulk arc, Marvel has never fully embraced the pure rage and destruction of World War Hulk.

In this storyline, a betrayed and exiled Hulk returns to Earth, not as a hero, but as a vengeful conqueror. He holds Earth’s heroes accountable for their sins. Another such story is Dark Reign where, after the dust settles from major events, the villains win. That’s the premise of Dark Reign, a chilling period in Marvel Comics where Norman Osborn takes control of S.H.I.E.L.D. and reshapes it into H.A.M.M.E.R.
This places villains in positions of power across the superhero community. The MCU, with its increasing exploration of government control and public perception of heroes, is ripe for a Dark Reign adaptation. It would be a perfect follow-up to ‘Secret Wars’. Avengers vs. X-Men could also be a perfect fit. With the X-Men set to join the MCU soon, it’s only a matter of time before ideological clashes arise.
