“There’s An Element Of Fear:” Christopher Nolan Embraces Early Reactions to ‘Oppenheimer’ Being Dubbed As A “Horror” Movie

Christopher Nolan hasn’t made a horror film in his career. But his latest, ‘Oppenheimer, is a certified fright fest. The early screening reactions to the movie have been intense, with some audience members walking out of the screenings. However, Christopher Nolan remains unfazed.

The ‘Memento’ and ‘Inception’ filmmaker says he understands the strong reaction to the film. The film perfectly captures the dread of the time when no one was sure about the world’s survival. ‘Oppenheimer’ is Nolan’s first Rated R movie since ‘Insomnia’ starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams.

Leave it to Christopher Nolan to create emotionally draining cinematic experiences. But ‘Oppenheimer’ might be the most terrifying film of his career yet. Only a month before its theatrical release, the most common one-word summation from the test-screening audience has been “horror.” Not too precious about his art, Christopher Nolan is embracing all kinds of audience reactions to his film.

Christopher Nolan talked to Wired magazine about the horror element of ‘Oppenheimer,’ saying, “Some people leave the movie absolutely devastated. They can’t speak. I mean, there’s an element of fear that’s there in the history and there in the underpinnings. But the love of the characters, the love of the relationships, is as strong as I’ve ever done.”

In an interview with Wired magazine, ‘Oppenheimer’ director Christopher Nolan illuminated his views about the evolution of AI and its current standing in society. According to him, AI has only gotten a lot of coverage lately as it is starting to render all media jobs obsolete. The dangers of AI, especially in weapons, have been long known to humanity.

The British filmmaker reasoned, “The growth of AI in terms of weapons systems and the problems that it is going to create have been very apparent for a lot of years. Few journalists bothered to write about it. Now that there’s a chatbot that can write an article for a local newspaper, suddenly it’s a crisis.”
