The Twitter Controversy With Elliot Page’s Deadname
Twitter let Elliot Page’s deadname, Ellen Page, run as trending for 45 minutes. Even though their hateful conduct policy strictly states users should refrain from “targeting others with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanize, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category. This includes targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals”.
Twitter spokesperson Trenton Kennedy confirmed that the site had removed it as a trending topic. According to him, it was a mistake on their end. “The term you referenced should not have been allowed to appear in Trends, and it has since been removed and prohibited from appearing in Trends,” Kennedy told Buzzfeed. “Our teams are constantly evaluating our internal processes for mitigating this from happening.”
The Person Targetting Elliot Page Unveiled
The person behind the whole issue is Jordan Peterson, who is a right-wing internet personality. He became famous after saying that he would refuse to use the pronouns a trans or nonbinary student asked him to. Peterson got a suspension from Twitter on June 22. He even said about Page that he removed “breasts removed by a criminal physician.” He even claimed in a video that Twitter won’t remove the suspension “unless I delete the hateful tweet in question, and I would rather die than do that.”
