Recent news of Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophia Gregoire separating has saddened citizens and fans from Canada and everywhere. After 18 years of marriage and three children, the couple decided to part ways.
Now, days after the divorce, it seems Sophie has disclosed the true cause of their relationship falling apart to her long-time friend Meghan Markle. Here are all the details.
Why Did Sophia Gregoire And Justin Trudeau Separate?
After 18 years of marriage, the couple announced on social media that they are separating. Their Instagram post stated that they have decided to part ways and still remain a close family with “deep love and respect for each other”. The former couple also asked for privacy in their difficult time.
The couple has been married since 2005 and has three children, the youngest of whom is nine years old. Sophie was a classmate and childhood friend of Trudeau’s older brother Michel, who died in an avalanche in 1998 at the age of 23.
After reconnecting as adults, they started dating in 2003 and got engaged a short time later. Their divorce is the first for a sitting Canadian prime minister since his own parents divorced in 1977. But now it seems that Gregoire has revealed new details about the separation and the events leading up to it.

What Gregoire Told Meghan Markle About The Divorce
Justin Trudeau’s wife, Sophia Trudeau, now Gregoire revealed she wanted to break free from traditional feminine household responsibilities on Meghan Markle’s podcast last year. In November 2022, Canada’s first lady joined Meghan Markle’s ‘Archetypes‘ podcast, headlined ‘Good Wife/Bad Wife, Good Mom/Bad Mom’. Meghan Markle highlighted in the introduction how Sophie Trudeau understood “crushing the guilt of expectations” placed on women. She reacted openly, saying that all women “long to be free in who we are” because they shoulder “most of the load” in the home and with the children.
She continued and said Sophie had a “full plate,” parenting a family and being married to Justin Trudeau. Sophie discussed the guilt that comes with being a woman and having to play numerous roles, saying, “I think we’ve learned to self-impose it. A little girl is not born feeling guilty for being a girl. We learn it. And that’s completely unacceptable. When I started becoming an older girl in an early adult stage, I realized that we often define ‘freedom’ as a way to be free from the world, but it’s really a way to be free in the world.”
The couple is now going through all the legal procedures while figuring out ways to co-parent their three kids.
