    Born Curtis Harris, C.J. was a singer from Jasper, Alabama. At the age of 8, he started learning guitar and playing piano. He developed a strong interest in music at an early age.

    A self-taught musician, Harris auditioned for the singing television reality show ‘American Idol’ in 2010 and auditioned for ‘The X-Factor’ and ‘The Voice’ around the same time. However, none of them were successful.

    Later, he decided that he was “going to give it another chance” and finished in sixth place on the 13th season of ‘American Idol’. In 2019, Harris went on to release his debut single titled In Love.

    On Sunday, January 15, Harris passed away at the age of 31 in his hometown Jasper, Ala. According to the Walker County Coroner’s Office, he was taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center.

    The singer had suffered cardiac arrest and died possibly because of a heart attack. “C.J. Harris was an incredible talent, and the news of his passing deeply saddens us,” the official Instagram handle of ‘American Idol’ wrote on their story. “He will be truly missed.”

    Harris cited his grandfather as a major influence on his life and called him his mentor. “When I was a little older, my granddad gave me a guitar,” he recalled. Usher, Keith Sweat, and Darius Rucker were his source of inspiration in music.
