Mike was just 16 years old when his mother died. He revealed how losing his mother taught him the art of survival in the harsh streets of New York. Iron Mike told the ShayShay Club, “You know, one of the best things that ever happened to me is that my mother died. Because my mother would have ‘babied’ me. He also recalled the time he was arrested around 38 times before even turning 13. Tyson was sent to a juvenile home called Tryson School for boys. He was very sad about it and said, “I never saw my mother happy with me and proud of me for doing something. She only knew me as being a wild kid running the streets, coming home with new clothes that she knew I didn’t pay for. I never got a chance to talk to her or know about her. Professionally, it has no effect, but it’s crushing emotionally and personally.”

Mike Tyson was raised in Brownsville, a neighborhood rife with crime. The boxer never even knew his biological father while growing up. Purcell Tyson was his real father’s name. Instead, he always knew his stepfather, Jimmy Kirkpatrick – the man who walked out on his family soon after Tyson was born.

Tyson would later say about Kirkpatrick, “My father was just a regular street guy caught up in the street world.” Tyson admitted that his childhood had shaped him into the man he is today and taught him to survive this cutthroat world.
