Pat McAfee Issues Disappointing Update On Possible WWE Comeback

Former All-Pro NFL punter Pat McAfee has been widely regarded as one of the best additions WWE made during the Thunderdome era. Following a rapid transition from WWE NXT to the main roster, McAfee quickly became a fan favorite thanks to his energetic commentary and on-screen chemistry with Michael Cole.

However, with McAfee remaining absent from WWE television since September of last year, fans have continued to wonder about his status. Addressing the speculation, McAfee recently took to his Instagram Stories to respond to a fan question about a potential return, and his update may not be the news many fans were hoping for.

While appreciating his time in the company, Pat McAfee revealed how his return might be something that doesn’t need to happen at the moment. The former Colts pundit further revealed how he feels that his WWE phase might have just passed at the moment.

Taking to his Instagram, he said, “Right now, it does not feel like it is something that’s supposed to happen. Feels like that business has kind of passed me by a little bit.”

He also spoke about how the business has given him so much over the years, including the opportunity to build a close friendship with fellow WWE commentator Michael Cole. The experience has clearly left a lasting impact on the veteran broadcaster, something Cole himself has openly acknowledged on several occasions.

While Michael Cole has had his share of memorable moments and occasional mishaps on the WWE commentary desk over the years, many fans believe his work reached another level when Pat McAfee joined him at ringside.

The chemistry between the two commentators was evident, and Cole often appeared to be genuinely enjoying his role more than ever. In previous interviews, Cole openly credited McAfee for helping him rediscover the fun side of the business and encouraging him to loosen up on commentary.

Cole shared, “With the emergence of Pat McAfee, Pat’s allowed me to understand that this business is supposed to be fun”. He further added, “Pat has allowed me to really open up. He’s taught me how to entertain.”

While opinions may vary on whether Cole’s commentary ranks among the very best, it is clear that working alongside McAfee has brought renewed energy and enjoyment to his role.

With McAfee currently having no plans to return, his last major WWE storyline saw him step into the ring against Gunther after ‘The Ring General’ confronted and beat up Cole on an episode of RAW. The rivalry culminated in a match at Backlash 2025, where the former NFL pundit ultimately came up short despite delivering an impressive performance.
