The galaxy far, far away has been a constant presence on the small screen since the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in 2019. However, it seems that this era of ‘Star Wars‘ dominance on television is coming to an end.
According to industry insider Daniel Ritchmann, Disney is planning to significantly reduce its ‘Star Wars’ TV output over the next few years. This news came after the shocking cancellation of ‘The Acolyte.’ Here’s why this decision has been reached.
The Days Of Getting Two Live-Action ‘Star Wars’ Series Each Year Might Be Over
Since the release of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, the beloved sci-fi franchise has been exclusively bound to the small screen. Disney+ has been the home for a steady stream of live-action series set in the ‘Star Wars’ universe, with an average of two new shows debuting each year.
Additionally, from the beloved ‘The Mandalorian’ to the divisive ‘The Acolyte’, the streaming service has offered something for every ‘Star Wars‘ fan. However, it appears that this era of ‘Star Wars’ television dominance is coming to a close. According to Daniel Ritchmann, Lucasfilm is planning to significantly reduce the number of live-action series it releases per year.
“I’m hearing that several series are in development, but it seems they plan to release only one live-action series per year starting in 2025,” Daniel stated. So, it seems like, starting in 2025, the galaxy far, far away will only see one new live-action series hit screens annually.
Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger Has Also Hinted At “Cutting Costs”
This decision marks a significant shift in ‘Star Wars‘ television strategy. While the franchise is not completely abandoning the small screen, it is clear that Disney is looking to slow down the pace of new series releases. The company is doing so to cut costs as Lucasfilm’s recent output of multiple series per year has been a significant investment.

Moreover, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger also previously commented on the matter. “Yep. And pull back, not just to focus, but it’s also as part of our cost containment initiative. Spending less on what we make and making less,” he stated.
However, despite the reduction in output, there are still several ‘Star Wars’ series in development at Lucasfilm. This means that fans can expect to see new stories no matter what. However, the days of two new live-action series per year may be behind us.
