What Did George R.R. Martin Do For Elden Ring Game?

Beloved fantasy author George R.R. Martin has acquired another feather in his cap. While the world impatiently waits for him to wrap up the final manuscript of ‘The Winds of Winter,’ the planned sixth book in his acclaimed epic fantasy series ‘A Song of Fire and Ice, the ever-so-busy scribe has lent his talents to another creative endeavor.

Believe it or not, George R.R. Martin has been dabbling as a significant artistic force for Elden Ring. It is a major action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, it credits Martin as a creative engine for providing the game with a layered backstory.

How Did George R.R. Martin Get Involved With Elden Ring?

In a conversation with Stephen Colbert, Martin revealed that FromSoftware got in touch with him about the game’s concept. The makers had approached him and wanted Martin to give the game a solid, narratively driven foundation that would be crucial in providing an ultimate gaming experience.

What Martin did was no mere hired writer’s polish. The man, known for his spectacular world-building, wrote a deeply-layered mythology with intricate and particular details of the history set before the game’s events. The game comprises conflicting relationships and wavering loyalties, which has become a staple of the storytelling yarns Martin weaves.

He might have birthed the world of Elden Ring, but Martin is not too keen on playing the game itself. He claims to have never played it. Frankly, we can’t blame him as it would take the focus off his vocation as a novelist!

What Made Elden Ring A Major Success?

Since its release, Elden Ring has sold 17.5 million copies and counting. It has also won critical laurels in the form of many Game of the Year awards. Director Miyazaki, however, is puzzled by the game’s success with the masses. Speaking at a Q&A session held during the 2022 PlayStation Partner Awards held in Tokyo, he said that he didn’t make much of the secret behind such a critical hit, stating, “I try not to think about it too much,” Miyazaki said, “because I think it would be a bad idea to analyze it deeply and to consciously try to replicate it in another game.”

Martin’s loral touches describe 5000 years before the game’s happenings in the present. The objective of this open-world game is for its players to embark on a perilous journey of thousand miles and malevolent obstacles, united in their objective to fix the titular ‘Elden Ring’. It is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
