It’s been a year since Prince Harry released his memoir ‘Spare’. The memoir became a dramatic element in the lives of the royal family members as it spilled many secrets that may not have worked very well for the royal family’s image.
In the last chapter of the book, Harry narrates an incident in the Frogmore Gardens. As Prince Philip’s funeral is underway in the chapter, Harry gets into a heated argument with his brother William, and father King Charles regarding his and Meghan Markle‘s decision to step back from royal life. In an unexpected twist, William invokes a “secret code” tied to their late mother, Princess Diana.

“I Swear On Mummy’s Life”: Why Did Prince William Use These Sacred Words?
In the memoir released on January 10, 2023, Harry took his readers on an emotional journey. One pivotal chapter in the memoir stands out, as it caused an irreparable fracture in the bond between the Duke of Sussex and his elder brother, Prince William. It was the climactic chapter of the controversial memoir.
“’Harold, you must listen to me! I just want you to be happy, Harold. I swear… I swear on Mummy’s life,’” Harry recounts his brother William as saying in ‘Spare’, describing the words that stopped both him and Charles in their tracks. These words were a sacred pledge reserved for times of crisis since their childhood, he clarifies. However, they still failed to mend the rift between the siblings.
The Duke of Sussex further writes in the book, “He’d used the secret code, the universal password. For nearly twenty-five years we’d reserved that soul-crushing vow for times when one of us needed to be heard, to be believed, quickly. For times when nothing else would do.”
However, the phrase “didn’t work,” Harry confesses. “I simply didn’t believe him, didn’t fully trust him. And vice versa. He saw it too. He saw that we were in a place of such hurt and doubt that even those sacred words couldn’t set us free,” he wrote.

‘Spare’ Has Done Irreparable Damage To Prince Harry And William’s Relationship
‘Spare‘ went down in history as one of the most damaging pieces of literature for the royal family, as it delved into Prince Harry’s royal childhood, military career, and his love story with Meghan. With several controversial claims made in the book, it became an instant bestseller and Amazon’s “Most Sold” book of 2023.
Among the book’s revelations was an allegation that William physically attacked Harry in 2019 after an argument during which William insulted Meghan. Speaking about the memoir, Prince Harry told People last year that the book also reflects a huge part of his mental health journey.
“This book and its truths are in many ways a continuation of my own mental health journey. It’s a raw account of my life — the good, the bad, and everything in between,” he said.
After the book’s release, Harry navigated royal waters independently. He attended King Charles and Queen Camilla’s coronation in May, where a public reconciliation with William remained elusive. The brothers did not sit together during the service, and the indifference has continued till date.
