Royal weddings are always the talk of the town, but this wedding of a junior royal had everyone interested for a very different reason. The wedding of Lord Ivar Mountbatten has made history and has been lauded as the first same-sex marriage in the British Royal Family. The most interesting detail about this wedding is perhaps Mountbatten’s ex-wife Penny Mountbatten who walked down the aisle with him and gave her former husband away.
Mountbatten married his partner James Coyle in 2018 in a private ceremony on his estate. According to historians, this is not the first same-sex relationship in the history of the British monarchy. However, this union is of higher significance as it is viewed as the Royal Family giving their stamp of approval to same-sex marriage.
