5. “Three Stories” (Season 1, Episode 21)

This is where everything begins. The truth about House’s leg is finally revealed in distorted memories. We understand that House’s pain is not just physical. 4. “No Reason” (Season 2, Episode 24)

House gets shot. And suddenly, the man who trusts only logic can no longer control his own mind. Hallucinations are a symptom of that.
For a person like House, that’s a terrifying thought. House’s mind is his greatest strength. It’s also his greatest weakness. It becomes unstable. We see House second-guessing himself in a way we’ve never seen before. This episode unsettles him and gives him a fear that never goes away.
3. “House’s Head” and “Wilson’s Heart” (Season 4, Episodes 15,16)

It’s not just about Amber, though. It’s about Wilson. And for once, House cannot escape the emotional consequences. House has made choices that hurt someone he cares about. And worse, he has made choices that hurt Wilson.
We see guilt, though he won’t admit it out loud. We see House try, in his own way, to make things right, though he knows he cannot make things right. It is one of those rare instances where House cannot outthink the consequences.

2. “Broken” (Season 6, Episodes 1,2)

House in a psychiatric hospital is like a different person. A person without Vicodin, without control, without his usual defences. It is uncomfortable to watch House because he is listening. He is connecting. He is even trying to get better.
1. “Help Me” (Season 6, Episode 22)

This is where things break. House cannot save a woman trapped under the rubble. And for once, there is no clever solution. He stays with her, talks to her, and does his best to keep her alive. And fails. And breaks.
The final scenes are heart-wrenching. House breaks. And one of the most telling signs is that he is finally acknowledging that all his pain means something.
