In a recent conversation with Variety., the director of ‘House of the Dragon‘ season 2 episode 8, Geeta Vasant Patel, broke down some of the most crucial moments from the season finale. She also directed episode 3, which had a similar scene with the two in a church.

Speaking about the similarities and differences in the two scenes, Patel said, “We made sure that the scenes between them in Episodes 3 and 8 had an organic storytelling to them, and that there was a rising action between the two of them.”

We were constantly going back and forth, tweaking this and that — so that those two scenes had a really direct relationship,” she added, further revealing that the scene was shot at the end of the production season. She also revealed that they were aiming for some childishness in the scene.

Patel further praised the two actresses and said, “Olivia and Emma did a really great job of bringing that juvenile, fearful, innocent aspect to the scene, where they wrestled between what they know they’re supposed to do and what they’re feeling that’s irrational.”

Alicent and Rhaenyra’s chemistry of friends turned foes has played a major part in this season. The episode 3 scene, which was also directed by Geeta Patel, was crucial for the build up that led to an important development in the season finale.

Explaining the same in detail, Patel said, “The other thing is we wanted to make sure that the scene in Episode 3 was on their minds. They’re like a divorced couple that still loves each other. When you see an ex, it’s almost as if that fight you had, or what they did to you, is fresh in your mind and just happened five minutes ago.

We wanted it to be that razor’s edge feeling when we entered this scene between the two of them,” the director added. “They really pushed and pulled each other in a way that I wasn’t sure how they were going to end it.”
