‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Will Expand The Legacy Of Targaryens With Another Aegon Targaryen

For years, fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ have had one recurring complaint about the Targaryen dynasty: their obsession with recycling the same names over and over again. Between multiple Aegons, Rhaenyras, and Daemons, even the most devoted followers find themselves lost.

Now, with HBO expanding the franchise through more prequels and spinoffs, that long-standing complaint is about to get louder. Not one, not two, but three different series will feature three different Aegon Targaryens.

How ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms’ Makes The Aegon Problem Even Bigger

The upcoming ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ series, slated for early 2026, will once again shine a spotlight on the silver-haired rulers of Westeros. The show, based on George R.R. Martin’s beloved “Dunk and Egg” novellas, will follow Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, none other than Aegon V Targaryen, aka Egg. At the start of the story, Egg is far from royalty. He’s the overlooked fourth son of King Maekar I, a boy with little expectation of inheriting the throne.

To hide his identity while traveling with Dunk, he shaves his iconic Targaryen hair and passes for an ordinary boy. Yet history tells us that Egg will one day become King Aegon V, remembered for his reforms, his humanity, and his tragic end at Summerhall. Fans already know several Aegons from other corners of the franchise. ‘House of the Dragon’ prominently features King Aegon II Targaryen, the usurper who claimed the Iron Throne in defiance of Rhaenyra, sparking the Dance of the Dragons.

The show also makes frequent reference to Aegon I, “the Conqueror,” who unified the Seven Kingdoms, as well as Rhaenyra’s young son, also named Aegon (often called Aegon the Younger). So, by the time ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ premieres, audiences will be juggling at least three different Aegons in live-action storytelling. To put it simply, HBO isn’t just doubling down, it’s tripling down on the Targaryens’ naming traditions.

While fans brace for more Aegons in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ and the eventual Aegon’s Conquest series, there’s no ignoring ‘House of the Dragon‘. After a bloody and emotionally devastating second season, HBO wasted no time in confirming that production for season 3 is underway. Emma D’Arcy recently marked the occasion with a behind-the-scenes video, declaring, “Here we are on day one of season 3. Action.”

That simple announcement sent waves of excitement through the fandom, though the timeline suggests patience will be required. Given the two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2, fans shouldn’t expect new episodes until mid-to-late 2026. Season 3 will push deeper into the Dance of the Dragons, the brutal civil war between Rhaenyra’s Team Black and Aegon II’s Team Green.

If season 2 left viewers gutted, season 3 is poised to show the devastating cost of this family feud on the entire realm. Meanwhile, HBO is carefully stacking its slate to ensure ‘Game of Thrones’ fans never go too long without a taste of Westeros. With ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ arriving in the same year as ‘House of the Dragon’ season 3, viewers have a lot to look forward to.
