A Real-World Crisis Nearly Shut Down One Of ‘The Boys’ Biggest Episodes

In Short
  • The season 4 finale of 'The Boys' faced potential cancellation due to its sensitive political content.
  • Showrunner Eric Kripke revealed that the episode's original title raised concerns after real-world political violence.
  • The episode was ultimately saved by changing its title, highlighting the balance between satire and sensitivity.

Even ‘The Boys’, a show that has not been afraid to go to extremes, was on shaky ground with its season 4. It is not surprising that it was controversial, as controversy is its trademark, but one episode came very close to getting canceled altogether.

And the reason? Reality hit a little too close to fiction.

Showrunner Eric Kripke disclosed that the season 4 finale, which was initially called Assassination Run, caused a lot of concern in the background. The episode has Homelander planning to assassinate an incumbent president, a plot that suddenly became much more sensitive after real-world political violence in 2024 involving Donald Trump.

It created a lot of anxiety because I directed that one. I had a lot of emotional eggs in that basket, and there was a very real possibility that they were going to delay its airing. It went all the way up the chain,” Kripke told Polygon. That timing couldn’t have been worse. Kripke recalled a moment when the future of the episode was in the air, even up to the topmost Amazon executives.

There was a time when it appeared that the episode might be postponed or even cancelled altogether. Finally, the answer was easy, yet informative: rename the episode to keep it. “All that came back was, ‘Just change the title. It’s a tasteless title, considering, but it’s different enough, and we will back it.”

It is a reminder of the thinness of the line between satire and sensitivity. ‘The Boys’ has always been a reflection of real-world power structures. They are often exaggerated and sometimes brutal, but occasionally, the real world catches up sooner than anticipated.

A Show That Reflects Chaos, For Better Or Worse

One of the reasons why ‘The Boys’ became such a success is its readiness to digest unpleasant facts with the help of dark humor and extreme narration. It is not merely entertaining; it responds. And as Kripke says, that creative outlet is what he will miss greatly as the series enters its final season. It is hard to have a platform to release frustration, to transform the maddening headlines, and make them something the audience can relate to.

Without it, even the creators are left with the same helplessness as the rest of the audience who are watching the news unfold. With season 5 coming, the finale has to be worthy of the show. As spinoffs like ‘Gen V’ and ‘Vought Rising’ continue to expand the universe, the franchise is not leaving anytime soon. However, the original series finale still signifies the end of something special.

And perhaps that is what makes this story strike even more. Despite all the chaos, violence, and shock value, ‘The Boys’ has always been about the world reflecting at us, us, just distorted enough to make us see it clearly. Sometimes, a little too clearly.
