Ariel Winter Gets Candid About Returning For ‘Modern Family’ Revival

It’s been five years since Modern Familyended, but fans never really moved on. The Dunphys and Pritchetts may have left our screens, but they’ve stayed in our hearts (and in endless reruns).

And now, Ariel Winter, who grew up playing the clever and sarcastic Alex Dunphy, has finally answered the big question. Would she ever return for a revival?

Talk about a ‘Modern Family‘ revival has been around since the show’s finale in 2020. But most of the time, it’s just fan chatter or the occasional cast joke. This time felt different because Ariel herself spoke up. And when Alex Dunphy talks, people pay attention.

Her answer came during an interview with E! News. When asked if she’d step back into Alex’s shoes, she didn’t hesitate. “I’d definitely be open to it,” Ariel said. She then added, “That’s not up to me. That’s up to the powers that be. If they want to hit me up, they can hit me up.”

And those words were enough to let the speculations go wild. For fans, hearing Ariel leave the door open was the closest thing to a green light they’ve had in years. However, it helps that she isn’t the only one who feels this way. Sofia Vergara, who played Gloria, has already teased the idea of a sequel and even joked to Ed O’Neill (Jay) not to “die” just in case they need him again.

Of course, if the show did come back, fans want to know what happened to their favorite characters. And Alex is at the top of that list. In the final episode, Alex packed her bags and flew to Switzerland for a research job. It was the perfect ending for her; smart, serious, and career-driven. But Ariel thinks Alex’s story shouldn’t end there.

She explained, “Alex had so many different interests, I would hope that she has expanded her life in so many ways that I know she could have.” In other words, Ariel wants to see Alex enjoying life outside of work. Maybe Alex is still making waves in science, but also falling in love, traveling, or finally relaxing a little.

Ariel believes Alex deserved a more balanced life. “She definitely could have branched out in so many more areas,” she said. And hearing that makes fans even more curious about what Alex’s life might look like today. Ariel still feels close to Alex and doesn’t talk about her like a past role; she talks about her like a real person whose journey isn’t done yet.

While Alex was off in Switzerland, Ariel was busy building her own future. After eleven years on a sitcom, she wanted something new, and fortunately, she’s found it. Her latest project is POOLS, an indie drama where she plays Delaney, a college student with a tough shell and complicated feelings.

For Ariel, the role was a total change from sitcom life. “I was just looking to do something new and different,” she said. Playing Delaney meant pulling from her own experiences and learning to connect with traits she doesn’t usually play. But Ariel has also built a strong career in voice acting, where millions of kids grew up hearing her as Disney’s Sofia the First. She’s also been part of ‘American Dad!,’ ‘Firebuds,’ and ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks.’

Just like she wants Alex to branch out, Ariel has been doing the same in her own career. And if the Dunphy-Pritchett crew ever gets back together, fans can bet Alex Dunphy will be there; eye rolls, sarcasm, and all!
