Five Days at Memorial‘ is a miniseries that dramatizes the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina in 2005, in which many lives were lost mysteriously inside a hospital. Released in 2022, the series is an adaptation of Sheri Fink’s non-fiction book of the same name. It stars Vera Farmiga, Cherry Jones, Cornelius Smith Jr., Robert Pine, and more.

Set at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans, the series shows how the hospital workers and the medical staff struggled to deal with the devastating aftermath of the natural disaster. Poor management, scarce resources, and slow communication worsened the situation and delayed help from arriving in time.

Just like ‘Chernobyl‘ was inspired by the book Voices from ‘Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster‘ by Nobel laureate Svetlana Alexievich, ‘Five Days at Memorial‘ is also rooted in powerful real-life testimony. Both shows place the experiences of common people at the center of the narrative, using their stories to reveal the human cost of a massive catastrophe.

Author Sheri Fink originally began the project as a magazine article. However, as more and more firsthand accounts emerged, the story eventually transformed into a full-length book.

Knowing that the events depicted in the series actually happened makes the viewing experience even more unsettling, highlighting the desperation and helplessness people faced during the crisis. In such extreme circumstances, ethical lines begin to blur in ways that are difficult to comprehend once the disaster is over.

Then comes the investigation, after the floodwaters finally recede. Much like the chilling revelations that emerged from inquiries into what went wrong at Chernobyl, ‘Five Days at Memorial‘ follows authorities as they examine the difficult decisions made inside Memorial Medical Center. As questions mount, the survival drama gradually turns into a haunting examination of accountability, forcing us all to confront the moral dilemmas faced by any human trapped in an impossible situation.

Although the series takes a few creative liberties, these choices ultimately help convey the raw emotional turmoil of those harrowing days.
