Did Emily Actually Deserve Lorelai’s Hatred On ‘Gilmore Girls’?

We all chuckled when Lorelai stood at the driveway of the Gilmore house, delaying her Friday night dinners as much as possible. However, was the Gilmore Girl justified in being so paranoid about her mother? All the Gilmores are strong, talented, and independent people but often, it can be their undoing. It is evident that although both Emily and Lorelai are headstrong, they could not be more different from each other. But does it explain tip-toeing and lashing out at Emily’s every step?

Dealing with teen pregnancy, Lorelai had to grow up and take control of her life at a young age. However, she had her immature and unreasonable moments that often hurt her mother’s feelings. Emily’s methods were not always justified but she always had her daughter’s well-being in her mind. Viewers have come to sympathize with the homemaker who faced ridicule at each opinion and decision she made. But the question still remains — did Emily deserve Lorelai’s hatred?

Was Lorelai Unreasonable?

In season seven episode three, Lorelai questions her entire life choices over a pop tart. She cannot bear that her parents had no outrageous reaction to her breakup with Luke. She and viewers too begin to wonder whether she made decisions based on her parents’ repelling reactions. Lorelai rightly claims to live her life on her terms. Nonetheless, she has been unfair to Emily several times, even when she did not deserve it.

For instance, in season two, she hid her engagement with Max Medina from Emily. Lorelai’s fears were reasonable but it was Emily’s foremost dream to see her daughter walk down the aisle. Therefore, it must have been heartbreaking to find out her daughter’s engagement from a stranger over the phone. Moreover, Lorelai blacklisted Natalie Swope, a brilliant interior designer, because she has worked for Emily before.

Lorelai’s paranoia of Emily, therefore, could be an overreaction. The sharpest knife to the heart for Emily was in episode 18 of season five. The article on the Dragonfly was nationally published where the chirpy owner berated her mother quite brutally. Although Lorelai tried to have her statements pulled, she should not have disclosed so much of her personal life to a stranger in the first place.

Where Did Emily Go Wrong?

The Gilmore family rift was not entirely Lorelai’s mistake. Emily was an adamant woman who followed the norms of her society and pushed her daughter to do the same. We understand Emily’s perspective when she reveals in season two that she was taught to be a mother to her daughter and not a friend. However, any viewer would prefer a Lorelai and Rory relationship over Emily and Lorelai’s.

‘Gilmore Girls’ fans would agree that Emily’s only drawback was to force her choices on Lorelai. Emily asked Christopher to fight for Lorelai, even when she knew she was dating Luke. She goes to outrageous lengths to be involved in her daughter’s life. However, these are desperate measures of a desperate mother, who has been shut out of her daughter’s life.
