The ‘Game of Thrones’ world has flourished over the years with prequels and worldbuilding projects. However, it is the first time since the main series ended in 2019 that the franchise seems to be ready to look into the future of Westeros.
George R.R. Martin has now announced that not only a single, but several sequels are being developed, which is a major milestone for the franchise.
George R.R. Martin Confirms Several ‘Game Of Thrones’ Sequels Are Quietly Moving Forward

In an interview at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, the author affirmed what fans have long assumed: HBO and Warner Bros. are not finished with the post-’Game of Thrones’ timeline. And though he kept his lips sealed about details, the anticipation of these possible follow-ups is already tangible. Martin revealed, “Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are five or six other projects in development. And yes, there’s a sequel or two.“

This single sentence, though phrased in a very measured way, has led to a lot of speculation. One of the biggest questions emerging from Martin’s revelation is simple yet thrilling: Whose story comes next? The writer did not provide hints. So, fans had to search through the few unresolved storylines that ‘Game of Thrones’ left.
Once deemed as a highly promising continuation, even by Kit Harington himself, who assisted in the development of the pitch, the series was pronounced dead in 2024. But fans are well aware that nothing in Hollywood ever dies. A solo Jon Snow show might be put on hold. However, he might always have the opportunity to feature in a bigger group in a follow-up.
Additionally, the westward journey of Arya Stark is one of the most demanded directions to continue the journey. Watching Arya sail into uncharted waters in the last moments of the series opened the perfect door to a sequel. Moreover, series about Arya’s travels would open up whole new territories of the world- places that have not been covered in the show or even in the books. It has long been thought by fans that hers is the most natural and exciting follow-up.
In the meantime, 2024 reports stated that a ‘Game of Thrones‘ film was quietly being developed at Warner Bros. It remains unknown if the movie is connected to Martin’s universe, but its timing is too suspicious. It is very much possible that the franchise is gearing towards both the big-screen and small-screen expansions. What is evident, though, is that the timetable of HBO is already filled with prequels. This includes ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’.
Martin On The Spider-Man Story He’ll Never Forgive

During the same festival, Martin also hit the headlines due to a completely different reason: his passionate criticism of retcons, reboots, and continuity erasures. His target? Spider-Man’s ‘One More Day‘ storyline. “I don’t like retcons. I don’t like reboots,” he said bluntly. “You follow a character for years, sometimes decades, and then they say, ‘None of that happened.’ That annoys the hell out of me.”

He identified the 2007 arc by Marvel that wiped the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary Jane off record. To Martin, reversing such a fundamental emotional landmark was like betraying not only the characters but also the readers who had experienced those tales with them. “You can’t undo these things,” he insisted. “But they do nowadays.” Martin knows the significance of stories to people. He understands the way fiction gets personal.
And perhaps more importantly, his stance explains why ‘Game of Thrones’ is unlikely to see any retcons or reworks under his watch. In case the franchise is proceeding, it will be in sequels, not rewrites. This philosophy may determine the future of storytelling. Other franchises would re-open or create new possibilities, but Martin’s world will keep expanding upwards and outwards, respecting the past instead of destroying it.
