After what felt like a final farewell in 2023, the doors of Button House are swinging open once again, and this time, they’re opening onto the big screen. The BBC has officially confirmed that ‘Ghosts‘ is returning as a feature film, titled ‘Ghosts: The Possession of Button House‘.
Filming begins next month, marking a major leap for the BAFTA-nominated sitcom that once seemed to have closed the book on its haunted mansion for good.
‘Ghosts’: Haunted Button House Officially Heads To Cinemas

Earlier this week, fans began to suspect something was happening when the cast and creators shared playful and cryptic posts online. As speculation quickly grew, the BBC stepped in to confirm the news, and Mathew Baynton backed it up on Instagram. As a result, excitement spread fast. Button House is officially going to the movies.

Importantly, the original team is returning for this big-screen chapter. Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard, and Ben Willbond have written the script and will once again appear in the film. Charlotte Ritchie, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, and Lolly Adefope are also coming back. Their involvement ensures that the humour and chemistry fans love will carry over into cinemas.
The creators have admitted that they truly believed they had said goodbye at the end of the final series. They never intended to return. However, once they developed a new story idea, everything changed. They simply could not resist revisiting their haunted home for one more adventure. They shared excitement about reuniting and welcoming some brilliant new faces for a “soul-stirring tale of life and death.”
A TV Favourite Carries On Its Legacy

Over the course of five series on BBC One, ‘Ghosts‘ built a loyal audience. The final episode, which aired as a Christmas special in 2023, attracted 7.2 million viewers. Because that episode showed Alison and Mike adjusting to life with their new baby, many fans felt it offered a heartfelt and satisfying conclusion.
At its core, the show follows Alison and Mike, a young couple who inherit an old mansion known as Button House. Soon after moving in, Alison discovers that she can see and speak to the ghosts who already live there. These spirits come from various historical periods, which adds both humour and chaos to daily life. The residents include Robin the caveman, along with Kitty, Thomas, Julian, Lady Fanny, Pat, Sir Humphrey Bone, and the Captain. Together, they represent eras stretching from prehistoric times right up to the modern day.

Currently, details about the film’s storyline remain under wraps. The team has not revealed where the movie fits within the established timeline, which only increases curiosity. At the same time, Martha Howe-Douglas heightened anticipation by posting, “You’re going to need popcorn.”
Production will once again take place at West Horsley Place in Surrey, the historic estate that has always served as Button House. By returning to the same location, the film preserves the atmosphere that viewers instantly recognise. Consequently, the move to cinema feels like a natural continuation rather than a complete departure.
Beyond the UK, ‘Ghosts‘ success continues to grow. An American adaptation is currently in its fifth season, and a sixth has already been commissioned. Most recently, a version launched in Czechia, while local adaptations have also been produced in France, Germany, Australia, and Greece. The ghosts are returning, and this time they are ready to entertain audiences in cinemas as well as in living rooms.
