Rory Gilmore in ‘Gilmore Girls‘ was a straight-A girl in academics. But it wasn’t the same with her passion for journalism. Her journalistic ambitions were definitely admirable, but the realities of the profession were far more different than her expectations.
Journalism is indeed a difficult profession and it requires a lot of willpower to stand up to what you believe in despite all odds. But Rory was the kind of person who couldn’t take criticism. She wasn’t ready to take the reality of adulthood and wasn’t a good journalist either. Here’s why her journalism career proved to be a colossal failure.
Rory Gilmore’s Writing Skills Were Rude For A Journalist
‘Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life‘ showed the struggles of Rory as a journalist, emphasizing how her career doesn’t go as planned. Rory made the same mistake twice during her tenure at Yale. She had a habit of being straightforward and rude, which was also reflected in her work. In journalism, you have to be considerate with your words and Rory was the complete opposite of it.
On the show, Rory writes a ballet review for “Die Jerk” in quite a rude manner, and faces backlash for her work. She even receives a warning for that, but does not learn from it.

Rory, being her usual self, repeats the same mistake in season 7 when she writes a piece about Logan‘s party. Ironically, she writes about the privileged people who get the opportunity to attend Yale, while neglecting the fact she’s also one of them. Moreover, when Rory is called out for her mistakes, she denies them.
‘Gilmore Girls’ Storyline Also Hinted At How Journalism Is Not Made For Rory Gilmore
There were actual signs throughout the show’s storyline suggesting that Rory wasn’t a good writer. She was rude in her writing and also had poor writing skills. However, her mistakes weren’t all that’s wrong with her. Her inability to take any kind of criticism constructively made her an even worse journalist.
At one point on the show, Rory also gets her mother involved in her profession after the editor of Yale newspaper gives her feedback. Rory also neglects Mitchum Huntzberger when she tells Rory that she does not have what it takes to be a journalist.
