Long-time fans will know how Christina Yang has always been very ambitious. She always spoke her mind, stayed driven, and never pretended to want a life she didn’t believe in. Then, Owen Hunt entered her life in Season 5, and things began to change.

From the initial moment, their connection felt very strong. Christina felt drawn to him, especially after he saved her when she slipped on the ice and got impaled by an icicle.

Since that moment, Owen has taken the dominant role in the relationship, while Christina has allowed herself to rely on him without hesitation. Later, when Owen returned, the relationship officially began. But even then, their dynamic imbalance was very much visible.

The Duo’s Core Differences Made The Outcome Inevitable

At first, we all thought Owen’s strong personality would be a great match for Cristina. But how wrong were we! That impression didn’t last long. Once he settled into the hospital, he became rigid, stubborn, and emotionally inconsistent. One moment, he showed affection, and the next, he pulled away, leaving Cristina to deal with constant uncertainty.

Besides, Owen’s PTSD explained some of that behavior and created deeply emotional moments between them. That struggle, however, wasn’t the main reason their relationship failed. In fact, the real problem was much more fundamental. The thing is, Owen never accepted Cristina for the person she really was.

He loved her, but he also held onto an idea of her that didn’t exist. He wanted a partner who would build a family with him, while Cristina had always been clear that she did not want children. And that difference wasn’t something they could compromise on. And the conflict reached its height when Cristina went for an abortion after becoming pregnant. That was it for Owen because he had no say in it at all.

Even when they made up and married later, Owen put zero effort into helping her cope with PTSD after the hospital shooting. He understood trauma better than most, yet he still pushed forward with a life-changing decision at the worst possible time.

Even after all these, Cristina and Owen kept returning to each other. The relationship continued far longer than it should have, even when it became obvious they wanted completely different lives.

However, nothing changed. Owen kept on repeating the same mistake, but on a much larger scale. He continued to push for a version of Cristina that didn’t exist, and over time, that pressure began to affect her. Basically, they were never working toward the same life.
