The explosive popularity of ‘Heated Rivalry‘ may have turned the show into a cultural sensation, but the attention hasn’t all been positive. As the series’ fandom grew louder online, some fans crossed the line with hateful comments and personal attacks against the cast.
Now, one of the show’s stars has had enough. Hudson Williams recently stepped forward with a strong message to the fandom, calling out the hateful behavior circulating online.
Hudson Williams Calls Out Toxic Fans Of ‘Heated Rivalry’

Hudson Williams addressed the rising toxicity in the ‘Heated Rivalry‘ fandom with a pointed joint statement on Instagram. The actor pushed back against the hateful comments that have circulated online for months. In fact, he made it clear that such behavior has no place among true supporters of the show.

Williams, who portrays Shane Hollander, posted, “Don’t call yourself a fan if you share racist/homophobic/biphobic/misogynistic/ageist/ableist/parasocial/bigoted comments of any kind.” He proudly stated that “None of us need your hateful ‘love.’”
The message also added, “We all respect and support and love each other and are on the same side. If you can’t accept that, gtfoh”. Soon, several of his co-stars came out in support, resharing his message. This included co-stars Robbie Graham-Kuntz and Francois Arnaud, director Jacob Tierney, and author Rachel Reid.
Although Williams and Arnaud did not reference a specific incident, the intent was directed towards the wave of toxic conversations that have followed the series since its release.
Williams admitted earlier this year that he found the backlash from some corners of the fandom surprising. In an interview with Wonderland, he said he never expected to encounter that level of disrespect or hostility. At the same time, Williams acknowledged that many fans have been supportive and have continued to show genuine appreciation for the show.
A now-deleted Threads exchange between Hudson Williams and his fans provides further context. This began when someone suggested that Williams had faced racial abuse from Francois Arnaud and Connor Storrie fans. Apparently, no one from the cast and crew was defending him.
However, Williams immediately shut down such rumors, stating that it was actually Francois’s idea to release the statement. He also added that he doesn’t spend time scrolling through comments only to find such hate. Instead, he had been vibing and watching figure skating highlights.
Why The Cast Faced Intense Scrutiny

Of course, the tension surrounding the fandom didn’t appear overnight. Ever since ‘Heated Rivalry‘ premiered on HBO Max last year, it quickly became a global phenomenon and attracted massive attention. The online conversation around it exploded alongside the show’s popularity.
The buzz became so widespread that writer Pat Brothell even reflected on it in an essay for The Daily Beast. He noted that between the fan edits, the constant social media praise, the backlash, and the endless stream of think pieces and headlines meant the “very gay show” had reached a point where it almost felt monocultural.

However, that intense spotlight hasn’t always been easy for the cast. With the show trending constantly online, paparazzi and internet users began digging into nearly every detail of the actors’ personal lives. It eventually turned friendships, interactions, and even rumors into major talking points.
François Arnaud experienced a situation similar to Williams after the series premiered. Rumors started circulating that he was dating his co-star Connor Storrie, who plays Ilya Rozanov. When he was asked about the speculation during an interview, Arnaud didn’t entertain the rumor and quickly shut it down, saying it’s “None of your f-ing business.”
Despite the negativity, Arnaud has also expressed gratitude toward the many fans who have been kind and respectful. For those who continue to attack the cast, he suggested the issue often comes down to people struggling to distinguish between fiction and reality. And forgetting that the actors behind the characters have their own lives outside the world of ‘Heated Rivalry‘.
