King’s Landing Turns Into Rhaenyra’s Biggest Nightmare In ‘House Of The Dragon’
The assassination of Ser Luthor Largent and several Gold Cloaks is more than just a vicious act of violence. Their bodies, arranged around a gruesome “feast” with the message “A Feast for Traitors” written in blood, send a chilling warning to anyone still loyal to Rhaenyra.

Episode 5 implies that Ormund Hightower is behind these attacks with the help of his agents within the city. Instead of engaging in open conflict with Rhaenyra, he is quietly eroding the very power that keeps Rhaenyra in check. The Gold Cloaks form the backbone of the security of King’s Landing.
Each assassination generates more fear, fewer defenders, and increasing confusion among soldiers and civilians. If the ones who are supposed to keep the capital safe can’t keep themselves safe, then ordinary citizens have little reason to believe anyone can keep them safe. It’s a brutal tactic, but a very powerful one.
How Fear Can Be More Powerful Than Dragons
One of the most interesting concepts of the episode is that dragons aren’t able to fix all of the problems. Rhaenyra can rule the skies. However, she can’t eradicate paranoia, unrest, and hidden enemies lurking in the shadows. Ormund knows that as well as military power, public confidence is vital.

If the people do not trust their king, victory in battle is of little consequence. As the season progresses, Rhaenyra is challenged by a problem that she can’t solve with dragons.
The task of restoring order, rebuilding trust, and uncovering the behind-the-scenes network involved in the attacks may be even more difficult than open war against the Greens. One thing is clear in Episode 5: the greatest threat to Rhaenyra’s reign is no longer outside King’s Landing; it is already within its walls.
