‘How I Met Your Mother’: Why Ted Mosby Is No Better Than Barney Stinson

Many women have ridiculed Barney Stinson for his playboy lifestyle and his quickness to dump a woman after a night. However, if we observe How I Met Your Mother closely, we shall find that Ted Mosbey was no better than his best friend. The sitcom is a nine-season-long quest to find the perfect match for Ted and the narrator has dumped many women in hopes of his dream girl.

Sadly, viewers find even the eponymous mother (Tracy McConnell) was not the one for Ted. If we ignore Ted’s romanticized perspective, viewers will discover that Ted is another run-of-the-mill heartbreaker. Some fans theorize that Ted deliberately bad-mouthed Barney to make himself look good in front of his children. We know Ted used to censor information while telling the tale of how he met his children’s mother. But there are several other ways that make Ted no better than his best friend.

Ted always became dismal when pondering over his prospects of finding a girlfriend. Many may agree that his misery was brought on by himself. In season one, Ted was dating Victoria who seemed the perfect match for the architect. Both wanted to settle down with a family happily.

However, in the episode ‘Nothing Good Ever Happens After 2 A.M.’ Ted almost cheated on his potential wife with Robin Scherbatsky.

Moreover, Ted justified his actions by explaining that this was the only chance he would get to be with Robin. He blamed the long distance for his failed relationship with Victoria.

However, even viewers get some clarity when Victoria makes Ted realize in season seven that he never got over Robin. If we tune out Ted’s narration from the sitcom, it seems he only strings along with his girlfriends till Robin says yes.

This is worse than ignoring calls after a one-night stand. Barney was at least always truthful about his intentions.

While we see Barney growing over the seasons, Ted never understood the phrase “learn from your mistakes”. When the series just began, he wanted to break up with Natalie and chose the most opportune moment to do so, on her birthday.

However, he insisted on dating her again a few episodes later and dumped her again on her birthday. Ted believed that some hard decisions had to be made in the quest for ‘The One‘. However, was it just an excuse to not look like a jerk?

In the finale of season seven, Victoria runs away with Ted from her wedding. However, Ted still chooses to be friends with Robin rather than be with Victoria. He even decides to hook up with a married woman just to try out some theory.

Ted is immature in many ways that were validated by the showwriters twice. Once when he married Tracy. Another was when he got back with Robin after Tracy died. So even if fans have enough reasons to dislike Barney, Ted wasn’t any better.
