Jason Sudeikis is coming back as the mustachioed, optimistic American football coach for the highly anticipated fourth season of ‘Ted Lasso‘, which starts August 5 on Apple TV+. But it almost didn’t happen.
Even with offers that reportedly reached over $1 million per episode and eventually climbed to a reported $3 million, Sudeikis was the last person on board with the idea of continuing the show.
Why Jason Sudeikis Almost Said No to ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4
Sudeikis’ reason was not about the money. It was about the story. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sudeikis said his initial reluctance came from a deep respect for the narrative he and his co-creators had carefully built over three seasons. He felt Ted Lasso’s journey had reached its natural end.

“The story was told. Ted went home to be with his son,” Sudeikis told the outlet. “I wasn’t going to have Ted uproot their life to justify the money truck. It made no sense to me.” He made it clear that his hesitancy was “not a negotiation tactic” but a real creative and moral dilemma.
By the third season, Sudeikis was already making a solid $1 million per episode. The chance to earn “significantly more” to come back was not enough to pull him away from his original vision. He had spent five years of his life writing, rewriting, and starring in the show, and he was creatively worn out. On top of that, the Season 3 finale was meant to be a definite ending, where Ted returns to Kansas City to be closer to his son, Henry, which brought a sense of closure to his main character arc.
What Finally Changed Jason Sudeikis’ Mind About Returning

For Sudeikis, the decision turned personal and emotional, not financial. “I know I needed this,” he admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. “I needed it as much as other people do.” The actor recognized that the show’s messages about kindness, hope, and optimism were just as important for him as they were for the millions of viewers who found comfort in the series. When fans told him the show “saved them,” his reply was a simple and honest truth: “It saved me too.“
He also found a new sense of creative joy in the character. “It is infectious to play a character who sees the best in people and isn’t mad at the world for all its foibles and bullies and shadows,” Sudeikis said. “It’s not like I’m Daniel Day-Lewis, but it was good to live in that to have that coursing through your brain and your body all day.”
New Story Direction for ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 4 Women’s Football Team
Now with Season 4, the story will be allowed to grow, which was a key condition for Sudeikis to agree to return.
Instead of just keeping things the same, the new season brings a fresh challenge for Ted. He will be coaching a second-division women’s football team. This new direction lets Ted Lasso keep spreading his unique brand of optimism without ignoring the emotional ending of Season 3.
