When ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ ended its long 12-season run in May 2019, the finale gave fans an emotional send-off, including the surprising pregnancy of Leonard and Penny.
It was one of the biggest moments of the show, and many viewers liked the ending, but it did not fully sit right with Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny for more than ten years.

Penny made it quite clear that she didn’t want any children throughout the show. From the early seasons of ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ she showed discomfort with the idea of becoming a mother.

Later on, she built a strong career in pharmaceutical sales and enjoyed a busy social life. Her choice felt real and consistent over time, and for Cuoco, especially, this was more than just an ordinary part of the role. To her, it felt like an important representation.
In Jessica Radloff’s 2022 book ‘The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series,’ Kaley Cuoco disclosed what she really thought about that ending.
“I actually wished that they did not [make Penny pregnant], because I loved that message [of Penny not wanting kids] so much,” she shared. “It was cute how the writers did it at the end with Penny’s surprise pregnancy, and all in all I’m glad, but I was actually voting for her not to [get pregnant].”

Kaley Cuoco also pointed out that couples often struggle when they want different things in life, especially when it comes to having children. She liked how Penny showed that not everyone wants to be a parent.
Cuoco stressed, “I didn’t want an episode where all of a sudden she’d say, ‘No, I want a baby!’ Because not everyone wants the life that the next person wants. Not everyone wants kids. Not everyone wants to be married. And I liked that.“

For her, keeping Penny child-free would have sent a stronger message. On many shows, pregnancy is often treated as the final happy ending for female characters. Cuoco, though, felt Penny’s story could have offered something different.
The choice to make Penny pregnant came late in the final season of ‘The Big Bang Theory‘. It brought the kind of mix of humor and emotion the show was known for. Leonard was thrilled, while Penny was clearly surprised, and the moment felt like a soft, hopeful ending for them as a couple.
