For nearly a decade, ‘Hannibal‘ fans have lived in a strange space between hope and heartbreak, clinging to the idea that Bryan Fuller’s criminally underrated series might one day rise again. The sudden ending of the show was not so much a conclusion but more of an unfinished sentence.
And even after years, star Mads Mikkelsen has not forgotten. Actually, on the contrary, his desire to return appears to be even more intense.
Why Mads Mikkelsen Still Can’t Let Go Of Hannibal

While marketing his next movie, ‘Dust Bunny’, Mikkelsen was interviewed by Collider. And again, his response was obvious: he is willing to go home to Dr. Hannibal Lecter. However, time is running out. Mads Mikkelsen’s portrayal of Hannibal Lecter has established itself in pop culture. He transformed the most notorious cannibal on television into a graceful, hypnotic character. No wonder fans couldn’t get enough.

And according to Mikkelsen, neither has the cast. “If it happens, we’ll all jump on board without hesitation,” he said. His voice wasn’t just certain, it was confident. The actors of the iconic show are not getting any younger. Additionally, the physicality of the show is too intense to have a realistic timeline. The revival, as Mikkelsen joked, shouldn’t wait until he’s a “great-grandfather.”
Behind the humor, however, is frustration. Hollywood is now obsessed with revivals. Take shows like ‘Dexter’, for example. These shows have risen from the dead successfully. Yet somehow, ‘Hannibal’, arguably one of the most visually ambitious and artistically fearless series ever made for network TV, remains untouched.
Mikkelsen acknowledges that he does not understand it. “I’m a little surprised, yeah. I don’t understand what numbers you’re supposed to have. I don’t understand exactly what kind of ratings you need to have. I’m not into that. I’m not a producer,” he stated. Still, hope remains. Mikkelsen is open. Hugh Dancy has shown interest. Bryan Fuller has been quoted on numerous occasions saying that he knows where the story can go next. The team is intact. The passion is undimmed.
Could ‘Hannibal’ Return?

In order to see why fans are still holding onto the hope of revival, it is necessary to recall where ‘Hannibal’ left its viewers, hanging on a literal and emotional cliff. Season 3 concluded with Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter embracing after a deadly confrontation with the Red Dragon, their most dreadful enemy. In a horrifying scene, Will dragged Hannibal over the cliff with him, a last gesture of affection? Surrender? Freedom? It is a matter of interpretation.

Moreover, it is this ambiguity that made the show so hypnotic. That might have been the end of the story, in that most tragic sense. However, Bryan Fuller made it clear: this is not the end. It was simply the end for now. It was always intended to go on into the ‘Silence of the Lambs’ arc and to explore Will and Hannibal’s relationship. And even outside of canon content, ‘Hannibal’ had space to develop.
The universe that Fuller created was not an adaptation, but a complete reimagining. It combined literature, horror, psychology, and art into something amusing. A resurgence would not be a mere continuation but a change. So what stands in the way? Rights issues have long been a hurdle; Clarice and Hannibal’s story resides in a complicated legal labyrinth. There’s also the challenge of finding a studio bold enough to handle something so rich and stylistically unconventional. Despite all this, if studios were to renew anything, it should be ‘Hannibal’.
