It goes without saying that the controversial ending of ‘Game of Thrones‘ heavily divided fans around the world. Many expected a passionate battle between White Walkers led by the Night King and mortal species on the show. Sadly, the expectations were never met, and the most problematic part of the whole storyline became Daenerys Targaryen‘s wild conquest of King’s Landing, which ultimately turned her into a “Mad Queen.”
It was something she never wished to become. But long before people bashed the show for many of its flawed storylines and character developments, acclaimed author Margaret Atwood shared her own thoughts and theories about the hit HBO fantasy series online. From admiring Emilia Clarke‘s character to making a few predictions about the ending, here is what Atwood highlighted.
Margaret Atwood Connected With Daenerys Targaryen, The Mother Of Dragons
As a celebrated writer herself, Margaret Atwood definitely felt fascinated by the world-building and mythology of ‘Game of Thrones.’ In her essay for The Guardian in 2015, she pointed out aspects that titillated her.
Atwood noted that dragons have appeared in fantasy stories for centuries, but George R.R. Martin’s dragons were something entirely different. Rather than mystical creatures, they were closer to “superweapon bazookas.”
She found them compelling, especially because they were under the control of Daenerys Targaryen, who basically birthed them. In her essay, she wrote, “Luckily, they’re in the hands of a character we can actually approve of, more or less.”
“Daenerys Targaryen surely has the blood of Uther Pendragon flowing in her veins, and we expect she will live up to it. The hairstyle is a bit High Elven, but why carp?” Atwood definitely saw Daenerys as one of the story’s most admirable figures, a leader audiences can genuinely support.
By the end of her essay, she was openly rooting for the Mother of Dragons to win and take the Iron Throne. Unfortunately, her predictions about the ending could not have been more different from what eventually happened.
Atwood’s Hopes For The ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Were Crushed
Near the conclusion of her essay, Atwood speculated about Daenerys’s future and expressed some very high hopes for the character’s ending. “Daenerys Targaryen, Mother of Dragons, we wish you well, even though we have trouble spelling your name,” she wrote.

“May the Force be with you! We think you will make a dandy Faerie Queene once you’ve obliterated those cold Snow King others thanks to the fire at your command.” Atwood also jokingly speculated that the Targaryen queen might one day marry and have “little Pendragons” of her own.
Though she doubted Tyrion Lannister would be the lucky groom. At the same time, she also expressed her admiration for Tyrion and hoped that he would survive the bloodshed that seemed inevitable in Westeros. As it turned out, only one of her wishes came true.
While Tyrion survives the wars, betrayal, and political chaos of ‘Game of Thrones,’ Daenerys suffers one of the most shocking downfalls in television history. Jon Snow ultimately kills her before she can take the throne she had spent years pursuing.
Looking back, Atwood’s essay captured what many fans believed at the time. We all believed Daenerys Targaryen was the story’s great hero and the destined savior of Westeros. The fact that the HBO show ultimately took the opposite direction makes Atwood’s predictions ever more fascinating today.
