Legendary actor Mark Hamill, best known for his iconic role as Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars‘, has voiced his opinion on many animated projects over the years. While he brought his talented voice work to the beloved Nickelodeon series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘, portraying the villainous Fire Lord Ozai, Hamill has now revealed he didn’t initially have much faith in the show’s success.
According to the actor, when he first read the script he was confident the series was doomed to fail after only a few episodes. “When I read the first script, I thought it was too smart for kids. It was so layered with its storytelling and complex characters” Hamill said. “I really believed it wouldn’t work and would be canceled very soon.”
The Show Felt Too Smart for Its Target Audience
Hamill’s doubts came from his belief that the deep narrative and thoughtful writing of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ was beyond the comprehension of its target of children and young teens. “The themes it dealt with, from genocide to the balance of good and evil, were really mature. I didn’t think kids would appreciate the intelligence of the story,” he stated.
However, Hamill couldn’t have been more wrong in his assessment. While children connected strongly to the heroic tales of Aang and friends, adults found just as much to love in the morally grey characters and sophisticated world-building of the show.

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ And Its Success
As the first season aired and grew in popularity, Hamill started to realize his mistake. “I was amazed to see not just kids but also their parents getting totally immersed in the Avatar world. It became a show the whole family could enjoy together” he said. “That’s when I learned that if you write to children, but don’t talk down to them, you’ll connect to both them and adults. Avatar was a great example of that“.
Over its three-season run, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ became a global phenomenon and is still praised today for its blending of entertainment and philosophical themes. If even Hamill was fooled, it serves as a testament to the series’ ability to appeal to people of all ages. While he may have doubted it initially, the actor clearly came to appreciate what made this Nickelodeon show into an animated classic.
