‘Modern Family’: How Jay Pritchett Is The Show’s Most Evolved Character

Jay Pritchett is the gruff but lovable patriarch of ‘Modern Family‘. Played by Ed O’Neill, Jay starts off as an old-school, set-in-his-ways character, and over the course of eleven seasons, he becomes one of the most developed characters of the show.

Through his relationships with his family, particularly his young wife Gloria and his gay son Mitchell, Jay learns to embrace modern values, showing that even the most old-school personalities can change.

As soon as we meet Jay, he is the quintessential classic, old-fashioned American dad. Sarcastic and blunt, and terribly insensitive to those around him. Jay’s reluctance to accept his son Mitchell’s homosexuality and his unwillingness to be introduced to the new ways of mainstream parenting reveal his traditional nature. But he does not remain like that forever and becomes a progressive man further, experiencing new opinions as the story moves forward. Gradually, he becomes capable of tolerating the relationship between his son and Cameron and even becomes more encouraging when he sees them adopt Lily.

Jay becomes a very open-minded person. Unlike most traditional sitcom patriarchs, who would not change at all, Jay does; in his case, the changes are for the better. Jay is also not just another sidekick comic character but a character of change.

Jay had married Gloria, who is much younger and Colombian; this pushed him out of his comfort zone even further. Besides negotiating cultural differences, Jay fathers another baby when Gloria gives birth to their son, Joe. Though not so thrilled at first, Jay learned to embrace fatherhood just as he had with his two older kids, Claire and Mitchell, but this time in a more gentle and patient way than he did with his former children. His relationship with Manny, Gloria’s boy from her previous marriage, reflects how Jay matured and learnt as he becomes an affectionate and somewhat unorthodox father.

Jay Pritchett’s character development also shows deep self-awareness. He learns how to express himself and acknowledges his imperfections through his conversations with his family. In later seasons, Jay actually becomes something of an emotional anchor for his children, giving them counsel in ways that become meaningful to them as adults. Showing how he can take responsibility for errors and transform his thinking showing a very vital journey to self-improvement.

An Unlikely Role Model For Change

Jay Pritchett undergoes tremendous development from being an uncouth, conservative father to a liberal-minded, emotionally perceptive patriarch. He proves that one can indeed learn at any stage and that a true turnaround often springs from openness to those who challenge our perspectives. At the end of it all, Jay’s journey allows viewers to witness how the willingness to change might actually fortify bonds in the family and send off a feeling of hope and humor.
