After more than a decade of living inside Jamie Fraser’s boots, Sam Heughan knew he couldn’t simply walk away when ‘Outlander‘ ended. As the Starz drama heads into its eighth and final season, the actor chose to mark the moment in a deeply personal way.
Instead of just wrapping filming and moving on, Heughan sat down and wrote Jamie a letter, and now he’s revealing exactly why he felt he had to do it.
Sam Heughan Explains Why He Needed To Write To Jamie Before Saying Goodbye

Heughan has played James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser since the very beginning of Outlander, a role rooted in Diana Gabaldon’s novels and built on loyalty, sacrifice, and epic love. Over the years, fans have watched Jamie’s devotion to Claire, his fierce protection of family, and his unwavering moral code define the series. But for Heughan, Jamie became more than just a character on a page or a script.

Ahead of the final season, Sassenach Spirits released The Jamie Fraser Collection, a commemorative bottle under Heughan’s whisky brand, The Sassenach, which he launched in 2021. Inside the collection, fans will find something unexpected: a letter Heughan personally wrote to Jamie.
Writing directly to a fictional character was surely awkward for him, but he confessed that putting pen to paper felt “surreal, foolish even.” However, he couldn’t deny that Jamie had been his companion for the last decade. He explains in the letter that Jamie stood by him “silently… as Ian would,” guiding him through an extraordinary journey.
Heughan shares that he doesn’t see Jamie as only a creation from Gabaldon’s books anymore. He recognizes him as someone loved by millions and someone who profoundly contributed to his own life.
Reflecting on the years they spent together, he writes that they “loved, lost and learnt at the same time.” He acknowledges that embodying Jamie’s deep love for Claire and his devotion to family was both a privilege and, at times, painful. Ultimately, he closes that portion of the letter with a simple but heartfelt message: “Thank You, Jamie.”
The Final Days On ‘Outlander’ Set Made The Ending Impossible To Ignore

The emotion behind the letter intensified when filming for Season 8 wrapped in late 2024. Even though the cast has completed multiple press tours since then, Heughan says those final days on set felt overwhelming.
He recalls how often the cast would suddenly realize they were experiencing something for the last time. He explains that shooting the final season proved difficult because “literally every day” someone would say, “Oh my God, this is the last time we’ll do X, Y, and Z.” That constant awareness made every scene carry extra meaning.

Now, with the premiere approaching, Heughan says the ending feels real. “It’s finally here,” he shares, adding that he feels ready. Writing the letter helped him reach that place of readiness.
He stresses that the tribute was not simply a promotional tie-in to his whisky brand. In fact, he says the release feels special because it was something deeply personal and separate from the usual press obligations. He wanted to do it for himself. The letter gave him a private moment of closure that interviews alone could not provide.
