Nicole Kidman is entering a very different chapter of her life after her split from Keith Urban, and someone who has known her for decades believes her ‘Practical Magic‘ role may offer a glimpse at who she really is.
Sandra Bullock has now described her longtime costar as “free and wild,” sharing a personal view of Kidman as the actress moves forward following her divorce.
‘Practical Magic’ Role Reveals Another Side Of Nicole Kidman

Bullock and Kidman made the comments while celebrating the first-ever 4K UHD release of ‘Practical Magic‘, which arrives on August 25. The two stars looked back at the beloved 1998 fantasy classic and discussed how much of themselves they see in the characters they played nearly three decades ago.
In the film, Bullock played the grounded and compassionate Sally Owens, while Kidman starred as her adventurous sister, Gillian. Together, the siblings face a family curse, magical abilities and an unbreakable bond. As Bullock reflected on Gillian, she admitted that she has always admired the character’s confidence and spontaneous nature.
“Gillian is really brave. I always wish I could be more like that in life. She knows what she is. She embraces what she is, and she fully leans into it,” Bullock shared in the clip.
Bullock then explained why Gillian has always seemed like such a natural fit for Kidman. “She’s playing a character, but you are seeing a lot of who Nicole really is,” Bullock said of Gillian. “She’s free and wild and adventurous and is always doing something amazing.”
Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Gillian’s Emotional Walls

Kidman, whose divorce from Urban was finalized in January, also explained why she feels personally connected to Gillian. Her comments highlighted a more vulnerable part of the character, who embraces who she is while also putting up barriers around love.

“I don’t want to reject who I am and what I am, and I love being who I am.’ Gillian has her own barriers and walls, which is, ‘Well, I’m just gonna have fun, and I know I’ll never be able to experience love or have love, but that’s okay,'” she stated.
Kidman’s words showed that Gillian’s adventurous personality only tells part of her story. Beneath that confidence, the character carries emotional defenses and appears to accept the idea that deep love may never happen for her.
Now, decades after Sally and Gillian first won over audiences, fans will soon get to return to the Owens family’s magical world. ‘Practical Magic 2‘ is heading to theaters later this year, with Kidman and Bullock returning as Gillian and Sally. As for when fans can see the movie, it was originally scheduled for Sept. 18, 2026. However, the release was later moved forward by one week to Sept. 11, 2026.
