George R. R. Martin Planned A More Brutal Fate For Sansa Stark In Original ‘Game Of Thrones’ Outline

Sansa Stark was one of the many characters who suffered immensely in the Game of Thrones series. She suffered at the hands of the Lannisters after the power-hungry rulers killed half of her family. Trapped in an insufferable engagement with Joffrey Baratheon, she endured his sadistic torture.

Sansa was traded off from one terrible marriage to another. The breaking point for her character came when Ramsey Bolton sexually assaulted Sansa after he married her. However, fans will be amazed to know that author George R. R. Martin had a worse fate planned for Sansa in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series.

Sansa Stark And Jeoffrey Baratheon’s Son Would’ve Changed Her Journey

When George R. R. Martin began writing ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ books more than 30 years ago, he had a completely different idea for Sansa Stark’s fate. The author had planned to wed her to Joffrey Baratheon and even have his son. Yes, the psychopathic boy kind who betrayed Sansa’s trust and ended up ordering the execution of her father, Ned Stark.

In the HBO series, Joffrey was engaged to Sansa but later married Margaery Tyrell. Whereas, Sansa went on to be the wife of Tyrion Lannister. The Lannisters had Sansa in a tight grip to secure Winterfell’s support. However, if she had given birth to Joffrey’s son, her escape would become more difficult.

In season four, Sansa ran away with Peter Baelish, who always treated chaos as a ladder to power. She didn’t quite understand Littlefinger’s motives yet. But, Joffrey was murdered at the Purple wedding, and Sansa needed to get away. This would not have been possible if she had been the mother to the next heir to the Iron Throne.

After everything Sansa Stark had suffered, she became brave and took revenge on her evil husband Ramsay Bolton too. She learned valuable skills and cunning, proving herself as a worthy leader. Sansa rose to become the Queen of the North, something that feels like a fitting ending to her arc.

Although the book series remains incomplete, readers can be sure this would not be possible if Sansa had Joffrey’s son in ‘Game Of Thrones.’

Initially, George R. R. Martin planned on focusing on Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Bran Stark, and Tyrion Lannister as the main characters. In the original outline, Jamie Lannister was going to kill everyone in line after Joffrey to inherit the Iron Throne. Therefore, we can only assume that Sansa’s son would also have been killed by Jamie.

Since Sansa was so entangled in the Lannister mess and she was not one of the main characters, Martin planned on killing off her character. Thankfully, he did not go ahead with this course. In the ‘Dance of Dragons’, Sansa remains in the Eerie under the alias Alayne Stone.

Of course, the idea can be that Sansa’s trauma and all the abuse she endured pushed her to a transformation where she emerged as a fierce woman in Westeros, but the initial plan would’ve hindered her journey for sure. It’s better this way. She needed to find her own voice and throne.
