‘The Boys’ Season 5 Is Taking Aim At Internet “Alpha Male” Culture

The last season of ‘The Boys’ appears to be prepared to give everything the fans want: bloody battles, extreme satire, and a lot of uncomfortable jokes.

However, a small moment of the recently released Season 5 trailer indicates that the show is about to burn a very particular modern trend.

‘The Boys’ Season 5 Uses The Deep To Mock The “Alpha Male” Podcast Trend

In a brief but hilarious ‘The Boys‘ Season 5 scene, The Deep appears to be hosting a podcast with Black Noir. It appears to be a random gag at first sight. However, the dialogue and the background details tell a different story. The show seems to be throwing an insult at the emergence of “alpha male” podcasts, and, frankly, it feels natural for the show.

The Deep, in the trailer, confidentially states that something is beta male behavior. Black Noir backs him up using a soundboard that enthusiastically shouts “Preach!” like a canned reaction. It is a fast joke, yet the background tells the whole story. The podcast, called Manhandled, is adorned with posters and slogans that resemble the type of hyper-masculine branding that is commonly linked to some online influencers.

The overconfidence, the talk of alpha and beta, and the self-importance all feel like a parody. And that’s very much in line with what ‘The Boys’ has always done best. The series has, over the years, gleefully satirized all aspects of celebrity culture, corporate media, and political propaganda.

Homelander and the Vought media machine have been used as the mouthpieces of stinging critiques of power, fame, and misinformation. So, it feels like the logical next step to target internet podcast culture.

The Joke Says A Lot About The Deep’s Future

In addition to the satire, the podcast reveal could also give a clue about The Deep’s direction in season 5. Since his introduction, the character has swung between pitiable comic relief and truly disturbing villain. There were times when he appeared to be getting a redemption arc following his descent to the bottom.

However, these hopes were mostly lost in subsequent seasons, particularly when The Deep tripled his allegiance to Homelander and the unhealthy ideology that surrounded him. The new podcast arrangement indicates that he has not learned from anything.

Instead of growing or reflecting, he appears to have leaned even further into the same shallow mindset that defined him from the start. As the show approaches its final, there is not enough time to totally redefine his character.

So instead of redeeming him, ‘The Boys’ appears to be prepared to do what it does best and make The Deep a walking punchline. It’s harsh, it’s ridiculous, and it’s exactly the kind of satire fans have come to love.
